I don’t know if that actually works, but it can't hurt.  \nI sit straighter, squinting my eyes to help myself see more clearly, holding my steering wheel at the ten-to-two position, just as my instructor taught me years ago.  \nI glance down at the map on my car screen; it must be around here somewhere.  \nWhy are these lanes so dark and narrow? If another car tries to pass me, I won’t stand a chance; these lanes can't fit two cars .  \nA rabbit suddenly darts out from the side of the hedge in front of my car, causing me to scream . I slam on the brakes and watch as it runs safely across to the other side.  \nI take deep, calming breaths to try to soothe the erratic beating of my heart. Sweat begins to run slowly down my back.  \nI glance at the map again to see that I have fifteen minutes until I arrive at my destination.  \n“Come on, you can do this.” I say, giving myself another pep talk.  \nI see light ahead and what seems to be smoke.“What the hell is that?” I say out loud.  \nI press my foot down on the accelerator, driving a bit faster, but not too fast. I never claimed to be a Formula 1 driver.  \nMy car headlights pick up something dark as I get closer. A loud gasp leaves me as I see a man lying motionless at the side of the road.  \nThe light I saw was from the headlight of his motorcycle, which is lying in pieces not far from him.  \nFuck!  \nI park my car, turn on my hazard warning lights, and reach across my seat to grab my bag. My hands are shaking as I search for my phone.  \nI climb out of my car on trembling legs as I walk closer, the phone pressed against my ear while I call 999.  \n“Emergency Services, which service do you require?” the operator asks.“Ambulance, please.” I shout frantically.  \nI rush back to my car, glance at the map on my screen, and tell them our location.  \n“Is the patient breathing?”  \n“I don’t know, they are lying on the floor, it looks like they have come off their motorbike.”  \nI kneel on the cold ground beside the rider, whose face is cut and covered in blood.  \n“Where is your helmet?” I ask, speaking softly as I try to hide the fear in my voice.  \nI place two fingers on his neck to find his pulse. Relief washes through me when I feel the strong thumping rhythm against my two fingers.  \nA loud groan leaves him, causing me to jump back.  \nI try to stand, but his large hand grabs my thigh, stopping me .
