CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.  \nThis book is part of the SIL Cameroon Branch Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education 5th year reading curriculum.  \nHoward  \nCarter  \nHoward was born 9th May 1874 (about 150 years ago) in London in England. His father was an artist.  \nAs a child he was often unwell and spent a lot of time living in the country away from the smoky city. He was taught at home by his parents.  \nWhen he was 17 years old Howard went to Egypt as an archaeological artist. He drew plans, diagrams and objects for archaeologists.  \nIn 1907 a very rich English man, Lord Carnarvon paid Howard to lead an excavation of an Ancient Egyptian tomb.  \nIn 1914 Lord Carnarvon decided to look for the tomb of Tutankhamun. He employed Howard Carter again to help him. World War 1 interrupted their work.  \nThey started work again in 1917 but couldn’t find the tomb. In 1922 Lord Carnarvon said he would stop paying Howard in one year if he didn’t find the tomb.  \nOn 4th November 1922 one of Howard’s men found a stone step in the sand. Soon a flight of steps was revealed. At the bottom was a stone door.  \nHoward chiselled a small hole in the door and said he could see “wonderful things”.  \nHoward spent months drawing and removing the amazing artefacts.
