Blogging is about conversations ; discussing the things that interest you, commenting on events and joining debates. It’s not about poetry, great literature or polished prose. \nSo join the conversation and don’t worry about getting things wrong. Stumble your way through blogging and learn by doing. \nWhy bother? \nLet’s consider why you’re doing this. Which of these motivations apply to you? \nI want to: \n1. Promote my business \n2. Reflect on my personal development \n3. Announce my news \n4. Share discoveries \n5. Placate my boss \n6. Own my corner of the web \n7. Improve my website’s Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) . \n8. Get recognition for my work \n9. Connect with my customers online \n10. Open up to customer feedback \nConversational communications \nBlogging is different from traditional media (like newspapers or TV) because the web allows everyone to be reporters, commentators and photographers. \nSo how can you hold a conversation on the web? \n• Invite comments from your readers \n• Respond to comments \n• Freely link to relevant blog posts \n• Comment on other bloggers’ posts \nWhat to write? \nAn empty blog can be as intimidating and uninspiring as a blank page. The first post is often the hardest. You may be wondering: \n• What’s permissible? \n• What will be interesting? \n• How will I come up with ideas? \nDeciding what’s right to write about \nThe subject or focus of your blog may change overtime and that’s absolutely fine. As you write, you’ll learn what you enjoy writing about and what your audience enjoys reading. \nWhy you don’t have to know it all \nBloggers don’t have to be the world’s foremost authority on a subject in order to write about it. Blogging is about discovery and exploration as much as it’s about sharing knowledge. \nWhere do ideas come from? \nYou may have to force your imagination to produce ideas, but that’s perfectly normal. Try brainstorming ideas with a friend. Look at other blogs for inspiration. Create a list – something like ‘The Top 10 Tricks for…’Turn your list into a series, turning one post into ten. \nWhy not write about… \n• A book you’ve read \n• A problem you’ve solved \n• A question you can’t answer \n• Something that inspires you \n• What motivates you \n• A recent project \n• A favourite client \n• A current dilemma \nHow to write for your blog: a short guide \nScheduling \nHow often will you blog? It’s a good idea to set a target. If you’re starting out, aim for one post per week, as a minimum. Twice a week is better. Once you have a list of blog post titles or rough ideas, outline a schedule for posting. Tell your readers when you will be posting, and don’t let them down! \nHow to write for your blog \nLuckily, human communication has stepped out of the linguistic manacles we were burdened with at school. Here are some old-school rules you can forget: \n• Split infinitives. What is a split infinitive? It doesn’t matter. \n• Contractions. Words like: can’t, don’t, shouldn’t. Contractions give your writing a conversational feel, so use them. \n• Repeating words. If you’re writing about computer networks (for example), it’s okay to repeat the words ‘computer networks’. \n• Starting sentences with ‘and’ or ‘because’. Because it’s okay to do this. \nWhat’s the point? \nThe best way to start writing a blog post is by defining your purpose. Answer the questions: \n• What am I trying to say? \n• Who am I writing this for? \n• What do I want to achieve? \nRemember your reader! \nBe nice to your reader. Think about them as you write, because you’re doing this for them. \n• Write a blog post, then leave it overnight and review it in the morning. You’re more likely to spot mistakes after a night’s sleep. \n• Use sub-headings to break up the text. Subheadings make screen reading a little bit easier and they help hurried readers scan your text. \n• Use a spell-ch","cbCain5VI2mdrqvj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCain5VI2mdrqvj","pdf",224024,"English","# Why bother?\n## Conversational communications\n## What to write?\n## Deciding what’s right to write about\n# Scheduling\n# How to write for your blog\n## Old-school rules you can forget\n## Remember your reader\n## The Internet: nothing to fear\n# Links\n## Writing makes you a better writer","[{\"question\":\"Why does the guide say blogging is different from traditional media?\",\"answer\":\"It explains that the web lets everyone act as reporters and commentators, so blogging becomes a two-way conversation rather than one-direction publishing.\"},{\"question\":\"How can a blogger decide what to write about?\",\"answer\":\"The guide suggests focusing on a subject or focus that can evolve over time, and using brainstorming, other blogs for inspiration, and turning lists into multi-post series.\"},{\"question\":\"What writing and publishing habits improve readability on screen?\",\"answer\":\"Use contractions for a conversational feel, include sub-headings, write short sentences, use spell-checkers, and ask a friend to review spelling, grammar, and whether the point is clear before publishing.\"}]","How to write for your blog - a short guide | PDF",1789775317]
