Co-0PERATIVE UNION. \nIssUED BY THECo-0PERATIVE UNION LISITED,LoNG MILLGATE,MANCHESTER. \n2016 \n# How to Start Co-operative Stores.\n\nThe desire to form Co-operaive Stores in towns orvillages where,as yet, there are none, generally arises inthe minds of some who have seen or heard of the doingsof Co-operation in places where it has already gained afirm footing.Having seen the good which the movementhas been capable of accomplishing in other towns andvillages, they become anxious to obtain its advantagesand benefits for their own neighbourhood, and set aboutthinking how this end can be accomplished. We maysuppose that their first impulse will be to talk the matterover with a few friends or fellow-working men,and seehow far they are willing to aid in the formation of asociety. This,at least,is what they should do.Havingobtained the support of a few earnest men who areanxious to give the thing a fair trial, the next questionnaturally is:—How are we to proceed to form a society, and what steps are necessary_to adopt to be put on \nB.proper and legal footing? The object of this tract, then,is to make known to those who are desirous ofestablishing Co-operative Stores the best method ofattaining their object. \nThe first step is to appoint a \nProvisional Committee, \nwho shall put themselves in communication with theCo-operative Union, whose duty and pleasure it is tofreely give all possible help in the promotion of newsocieties. \nThe provisional committee shall also communicatewith the centres of the various bodies of working men in \nthe neighbourhood, inviting their co-operation in thework, with a view to ascertain how far their assistancemay be relied on in the event ofa society being established. \nThe Co-operative Union willon application, send afree supply of tracts for general distribution.Theseshould be well distributed throughout the place, and willhelp to arouse a public interest in the matter.Whensufficient interest has been aroused, the provisionalcommittee should arrange for \nA Public Meeting \nto be held, making it as widely known as possible.TheUnion,or the section in which the intended society issituate, will,if asked, send speakers(free of charge),whowill explain to the meeting all about the principles andpractices of the movement. After these matters havebeen explained, and resolutions in support of the objectof the meeting have been adopted,an announcementshould be made that the secretary of the provisionacommittee will receive the names of those persons willingto join;also,if any of the audience are anxious for astill further explanation regarding the advantages ofco-operation,the provisional committee will be mosthappy to afford them personal interviews after themeeting \nAfter the public meeting,it may be found that thecommittee have received a sufficient number of names towarrant them in starting a society with a fair hope ofsuccess. \nRules. \nThe Co-operative Union have prepared a set of
