Please delete these notes before printing  \nHow to Make and Use a Donkey Plough  \nIntroduction  \nPloughing helps farmers prepare their land by turning the soil to make it better able to benefit from rainfall and removing weeds. This then provides a favourable seedbed for whatever crop the farmer opts to plant.  \nThere are many types of plough available, ranging from those which use human power to others pulled by donkeys or oxen, to those that are mechanically operated by tractors.  \nThis book shows you how to construct a plough that can be drawn by a donkey, or perhaps a camel or ox. It also gives advice on how to train your animal to pull the plough, and tipson plough maintenance.  \nOne traditional wooden plough used in many countries was a simple, lightweight assemblage of wooden pieces fitted together.  \nThis plough used a single handle that passed through a log. The log acted as the main body of the plough, and only a small proportion of the plough was made of metal.  \nNow many farmers are successfully using an all-metal but still lightweight version of this traditional design.  \nScrap metal obtained from old vehicles is ideal for this purpose. The blade, for example, can be made from leaf springs from old suspensions. The steel obtained in this way can easily be hardened by heating it first and then cooling it rapidly in cold water.
