How To Color In A Coloring Book\n\nArtificial Intelligence LaboratoryMassachusetts Institute of Technology \nCR Category:8.2(Computer Graphics) \nKeywords:Shading(or filling, flooding)closed curvesraster graphics \n## Abstract\n\nChildren's coloring books contain line drawings which achild can fill in with a crayon to produce colored pictures. Two dimensional colored areas can be produced on a rasterdisplay by an analogous method. After drawing a closedcurve with ine drawing commands, the graphics system canfill the area bordered by the curve. This paper presents analgorithm for filling in areas of any size or shape. The areamay be filled with any color, texture,or \"wallpaper\"pattern.The algorithm is simple, flexible and efficient, optimized totake advantage of the the memory organization of mostcurrent raster graphics systems. \n## 1.Introduction\n\nFor years, the predominance of vector displays for computergraphics has limited computer generated pictures to drawingsconsisting solely of lines and points. Now,the developmentof raster displays allows pictures containing two dimensionalsolid and textured areas. What are good ways of describingregions of various sizes, shapes and colors to the computer? This paper explores one answer to this question. \nThe computer's display screen can be treated like a child'scoloring book. The coloring book supplies line drawingsindicating the borders of areas to be filled in The childtakes a crayon, picks a place in the interior of an area, andfills it in by continually expanding the colored area until ithits the boundary lines between areas. \nMost currently available computer graphics systems providea wide range of facilities for making line drawings.Thesecan be used to draw the outlines of regions to be filled in.The graphics system can be extended with a primitive calledSHADE(FLOOD in some systems),which is given an interiorpoint, and fills in the 2rea.A\"crayon\"of any color may bechosen,or textures, shading or wallpaper patterns may beused to fill the area in instead of a solid color.(See Figure[1]-Figure [2].) \nThis provides a conceptually simple and flexible means ofcreating and manipulating two dimensional areas.Theprogram doesn't have to know.the size or shape of the regionin advance.Since it searches the screen to find the extent of \nHenry Lieberman \nFigure [1] \nFigure[2] \nHere's a simple example of the shading program at work.Westart out with a line drawing of Snoopy, similar to the kind ofdrawing that might appear in a child's coloring book. \nWe tell the system which area we want to fill by picking apoint with the graphics cursor.A shading pattern tells thesystem how to fill the area.In this example,Snoopy's body isfilled with diagonal lines, his hat and scarf with random points, his arm with vertical lines. \nthe area,it is not tied to a particular representation for theregion's boundary. The outline of the region may beproduced by a line drawing program, hand drawn by anartist using a tablet or other graphic input device,or takenfrom a photograph or television picture. This is a popularoperation in \"“paint\"programs,which allow a user to inputline drawings on a tablet, outlining areas, and have thecomputer paint by number, filling in each area with a paint ofa chosen color. \nHere's another way of thinking about the problem:Considerthe task of building a robot vacuum cleaner. The robotshould be able to vacuum a room of any size or shape, containing furniture or other obstacles. It should make sureto clean every spot on the floor, without getting stuck byhitting the walls or furnture. It must also avoid getting intoan infinite loop cleaning the same spot over and over again, and must be able to tell when it is finished.Since computervision systems are expensive and difficult to build, and therobot should be simple and cheap,a further restriction willbe imposed that the robot willbe blind -it won't have a TVcamera to watch for obstacles.Instead,it will be equippedwith touch sensors,so it will be able to detect when","cbCaisI1WabgEckG","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisI1WabgEckG","pdf",537096,"English","#
