The preface explains the author’s research process, surveying technical aviation men and identifying that stick-controlled gliders have replaced older hang-glider designs. It emphasizes that modern gliders are efficient aircraft requiring technical skill, responsible judgment, and safety awareness. gliding and the plans forbuilding a modern glider,I spent considerabletime interviewing several well known technical avia-tion men on the subject, hoping to find some one whowas well versed in this comparatively new art which isnow making itself felt in all aviation circles. \nAt first I was much discouraged to find that fewtechnical experts knew anything of gliding in a stick-controlled glider such as is now being used with muchsuccess in Europe. The days of the old hang-gliderhave passed and this form of machine is completelytaboo in the best gliding circles. Its instability andinefficiency have been condemned by keen glider en-thusiasts. \nFinally I noticed that Arch Whitehouse, technicaleditor of the Hersey publications, was putting out sev-eralinteresting articles on this subject and I approachedhim with reference to the writing of a booklet on thisnew art.At first he was reluctant to undertake thetask, explaining that gliders were no longer toys butefficient machines that actually flew and required acertain amount of technical skill to build. He pointed \nout that these modern gliders do not merely\"slidedown the wind\"but actually fly, gain considerable alti-tude,and are capable of remaining in the air for con-siderable lengths of time. \n“The man who attempts to design and explain thebuilding of a glider,is taking a great responsibilityupon himself, and I would want to spend a little moretime studying t","cbCaiqDpPdtCFhzp","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqDpPdtCFhzp","pdf",2872157,68,"English","# Preface\n## How Gliding Started\n## What Is Gliding?\n## Building the
