Composting latrines (producing an odourless valuable fertiliser as a by-product) . Dual composting latrines can be continually alternated in their use.  \nEcosan latrines (producing odourless solid and liquid fertiliser as by-products) .  \nBefore building a latrine, you must choose a good site. You need a level piece of ground away from the well or water source.  \nThe latrine should be about 10 yards (10 metres) from any house so that the flies or bad smell don't bother people when they are in their homes.  \nBut if the latrine is too far away, some people might not use it. If the village is built on a hill, then the latrine should always be further down the hill than the well or water source. If the latrine is higher up the hill than the well, then the water will carry germs from the latrine to the well and people will become ill after drinking the water.  \nIf the latrine is built on the same level as the well, it must be at least 50 yards (metres) away.  \nWhen you have chosen your site, you need to dig a pit. Digging a pit is hard work, so organise a work party with your neighbours. When you have dug your latrine, you can help them to dig theirs.  \nFirst, dig a square in the ground. It should be about 4½ ft (1.4m) wide and 8 inches (20cm) deep.
