It links rotation to apparent changes in the sky, day and night, and the way shadows lengthen or shorten. The lesson also covers revolution around the Sun, defining key terms like orbit and ellipse, and shows how gravity keeps Earth in place. Earth Moves\n\nEarth is always moving. In fact,Earth is spinning asyou read this. Why can't you feel it?You are movingwith Earth. When Earth spins, everything on it spinstoo.Earth's movement is smooth and steady. \nHow do you know Earth is moving? One wayyou can tell is that the Sun and the stars seem to \nbe moving in the sky.Another way is by observing thechange in seasons. This change is more obvious in someplaces than in others. The change in seasons is partlydue to how Earth moves through space. \nScientists use many types of equipment to see howobjects seem to move in the sky. \nEarth as seen from space \n# The Rotation of Earth\n\nEarth spins around its axis. The axisis an imaginary line that goes throughEarth from the North Pole to the SouthPole.A rotation is the spinning of Eartharound its axis. One complete turnaround the axis is one rotation. It takesEarth almost twenty-four hours,or oneday,to make a full rotation. \nEarth spins from west to east, but objects in the sky appear to movefrom east to west. You can see why thishappens with a simple experiment.Holdyour hand in front of your face.Moveyour head to the right.Did you noticethat your hand seemed to move to the left? This is how the movement of the Sun andother stars appears to people on Earth.Earth moves from west to east, and theSun and other stars appear to move fromeast to west. \nThe Sun appears to movethrough the sky during the day. \n# Shadows\n\nIn the morning and evening, when the Sun seems lowin the sky, shadows look long.In the middle of the day, when the Sun appears to be overhead, shadows lookshort.Earth's rotation also causes day to become nightand night to become day.Any place that is turned \ntoward the Sun experiences daytime.Nighttime is whenthat part of Earth is turned away from the Sun. \nThe Sun shines too brightly for us to see starsduring the day.Look at a clear sky for several nights. You may notice that stars seem to move from east towest in the sky. \n# Daylight\n\nEvery place on Earth has a different number ofdaylight hours at different times of the year. This chartshows the changes in daylight hours over a year,inChicago,a city in the Northern Hemisphere. \n# Hours of Daylight in Chicago\n\n# Revolutions of Earth\n\nEarth rotates on its axis.It also revolves around theSun at the same time.A revolution is the movement ofone object around another.Earth has made onerevolution when it has made one full trip around theSun.An orbit is the path","cbCaiq2gsA9jOydy","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiq2gsA9jOydy","pdf",756882,"English","# How Earth
