A broad main street, late Victorian shop-fronts and a central reservation planted optimistically with rose-bushes. The centenary celebrations had prompted the council to loop strings of multicoloured flags between the power poles. Every sixth flag was lime-green, Emma noticed, a scarce colour out here in the west where drought had coloured everything shades of red and ochre and dust. Heat shimmered, pressed down on corrugated roofs and into the spaces between. Only the flags moved, fluttering once in a sultry breath of air, before falling inert again.
