Horus rising book.  \nI started reading the Horus Heresy series with Horus Rising, written by Dan Abnett. Although it's a good book, I'm glad I didn't start my Warhammer journey here. There were some moments that made me go \"hmm\", but nothing too negative-just entertainingly weird. The story is about the Emperor of Man and his sons, especially Warmaster Horus, trying to find their place in the universe after conquering everything. Militaristic fantasy often has a Shakespearean feel to it, which I found amusing. The book offers interesting worldbuilding with strange planets, aliens, and characters that are slowly but surely defined. It also explores some grey tones of totalitarianism, which was nice to see. The jokes were probably my favorite part, not because they were hilarious, but because they added a personal touch. I think this would be great for people who like sci-fi but aren't too into the scientific stuff. There's not much science in it; instead, you get to learn about what a chainsaw sword can do! I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars for now. Horus Rising: The Seeds of Heresy Are Sown is a novel in the Warhammer Universe, based on fanfiction. Dan Abnett is a British writer and comic creator. He has worked as a scenarist for Marvel and written comics such as Sinister Dexter and Death's Head. Horus Rising introduces the Imperium of Man and its ideology through Captain Loken's eyes. The novel explores materialism, militarism, and the Astartes' society structure. It also delves into other species and civilizations, often through memories shared by Loken with a remembrancer named Mersadie Oliton. Loken is portrayed as honest and reliable, but also stoic and stubborn. His character creates an interesting effect, as his actions are both accepted and criticized. The novel sets the stage for future events in the Warhammer Universe and intrigues readers with its portrayal of the Emperor and the power of the warp. However, some characters feel schematic, and the narrative stays on the surface rather than delving deeper into their emotions and motivations. we still struggle with inner conflict in Euphrati Keeler after encountering the warp, or in Warmaster Horus when he faces another human civilization, “Interex,” which could potentially be equals to the Imperium. These moments captivate our attention, and I appreciate them! However, we only get a brief look at other cultures, civilizations, planets, and species that are equally attractive and captivating but don’t receive sufficient in-depth exploration. On one hand, the author has managed to pack an impressive multitude of events into this novel, revealing their true nature. Unfortunately, the language is quite simple and dry for my taste, which may make it unsuitable for those seeking immersive descriptions. For me, this novel was an interesting read, especially if you're a fan of the game or the sci-fi/fantasy action genre in general. The structure is dense with events, though somewhat lacking in detailed descriptions. In the distant past, under Emperor's direct command, humanity embarked on the Great Crusade, spreading Imperium's influence across the galaxy over two centuries. Our journey begins a year after Horus, the first primarch, took charge as Warmaster and commander of Emperor's forces while returning to Terra for other tasks. This novel follows three pivotal battles with xenos and human outcasts, focusing on Captain Garviel Loken's perspective as he witnesses the initial corruption of Horus within his inner circle. Dan Abnett skillfully weaves together existing character backstories, making it easy to follow despite being set amidst a massive Imperial Crusade. With a mix of familiar names and new faces, Abnett draws you into the action, investing you in the characters as they navigate the unfolding chaos.
