The vibrant fabrics shimmered in the light of the roaring fires filling the hearths, catching the eye as they rippled through the air like a living, breathing tapestry. The musicians, clad in rich, jewel-toned garments, played with infectious joy, their bright smiles mirroring the lightness in their hearts. Every note they strummed, plucked, or drummed filled the great hall with an energy that seemed to lift the very spirits of all who were gathered.  \nThe court of the small yet prosperous kingdom was alive with celebration, a joyful buzz echoing through the winter castle’s vast, snowdusted walls. It had been ten long months since their beloved king, Maxwell Beckham, had called for such a grand dinner, and the anticipation in the air was palpable. The great hall was draped in gold from floor to ceiling, with golden tapestries hanging like liquid sunlight. It was a vision of opulence. The delicate gleam of the furniture, the ornate chandeliers sparkling above, and the long tables laden with delicacies, all reflected the kingdom’s wealth and the king’s return to his rightful place.  \nFor the first time in nearly a year, the court had gathered together in the warmth of the grand hall. The night was young, but already it was clear that this evening would be one of merriment. The king’s invitation to dine was more than a call to feast, it was a declaration of life, joy, and unity after months of silence. Finally, the ruler ’s period of mourning had passed. Theman in his prime, once again, acted as such.  \nEven with the joyous air surrounding them, every person remembered the reason such a great time of mourning had fallen upon them. Their queen was dead. Susan of Cleaves was a fair-skinned beauty with hair nearly as pale as snow. She was a kind woman with a soft voice. Her eyes mirrored the sea. The late queen’s thin, pink lips were always drawn into a smile  \nnever giving way to the hardships she faced as a royal. She was just a girl when she was sent from her German principality to marry Maxwell. They were both still children at the mere age of ten. It was five years later when their marriage was consummated. Within the first year after consummation, the royals had an heir just in time for them to inherit the throne after the passing of Maxwell’s father, David. The first presumed heir to the throne was named for his late grandfather. Within four years, the couple was childless once more and so the vicious cycle of their marriage began.  \nMaxwell never stopped caring for Susan. He cherished her and comforted her after each failed childbearing until the winter of 1525. That was when he turned his eyes to Jane Carlton. She was the youngest daughter of a knight, and she was everything the queen was not.
