could beat any team ofaliens with one hand tied behind his back. \nHome Field Advantage \nCHAPTER ONE \nJuly 9.2000 \n4:15 p.m. \nJonirelaxed on the lounge chair behind her home overlookingCrestview Park. She was 15 years old, five feet, five inchestall,130 pounds and considered,by most,to be one of thebest pitchers, male or female,in Massachusetts. Her dad hadbegun teaching Joni the game when she was only two, oldenough to carry a plastic baseball bat and strong enough tohit a Wiffle ball.Joni had a mean “slurve”and a dead-eyefast ball. She was quick on the base paths and could hit wellto all fields. She also understood the mystique of the gameitself.Joni truly loved baseball and all that it represented:its traditions, history, the connection to family, home teamloyalty and the sense of pride Americans had for theirnational past time. \nCrestview Park had two baseball fields,a small one forthe younger kids, called Yaz Field, and a major league size \nGary H.Goldberg \nbaseball field called Jackson Field, for those with dreamsof playing in the \"bigs.\"Joni had played on Jackson sinceshe was seven. For years, she came out early in the morningbefore school and practiced pitching with her dad.Afterdinner, they walked the field, discovering every hole, rough, hill, angle, blind spot and shadow, which could give theman advantage and their opponents a nightmare. They creatednicknames and signals for the “elite eight.” \nPITCHER’S MOUND.aka \"rabbit's foot\"(adjust pants). The hole in front of the pitcher's mound was shaped like arabbit's foot, causing pitchers with large, wide feet to losetheir balance in delivering the ball to home plate. \nBATTER'’S BOX,aka\"the coffin”(fist to chest). The batter'sbox was comprised of very loose dirt around home plate, causing runners to sink in and get a very slow start to firstbase. \nTHIRD BASE,aka“the grave”(hat off head). The third basearea was very rocky and hard, resulting in balls taking crazyhops. \nTHIRD BASE LINE,aka \"the sand box\"(wipe feet).Abuntbetween home and third that hugged the third base line wouldbe stranded in quicksand-the ball would simply die there. \nLEFT FIELD LINE,aka \"the slide\"(hand across the letters). In left field, grass did not grow.As a result, the ball bouncedextremely hard and the player's spikes slid on the fastsurface. \n# Home Field Advantage\n\nLEFT CENTERaka\"the ditch\"(hand behind knees).Due tothe age of the field, there was a drainage ditch in left center.Several players caught their spikes in the ditch, causingsevere sprains, broken ankles and torn ligaments \nRIGHT CENTER FIELD.aka\"the cat's tail\"(pat head).Inright center, there was a narrow ditch that had the shape ofa cat's tail.It was similar to a small grand canyon. The ballswould hit the tail, bouncing in all directions. \nRIGHT FIELDLINE,aka \"hornets'nest\"(pat face).Hornetsbuilt a nest in a small hole in the ground.Running too closeto the nest increased the likelihood of being stung, resultingin a missed fly ball or an extra base hit \nAs she sat back in her lounge chair,Joni smiled. She neverlost on her field. She could not wait for her next game.Jonidid not realize, however, that her next game could very wellbe her last. \nGary H.Goldberg \nCHAPTER TWO \nJuly 9,2000 \n4:30 p.m. \nAs Joni was about to doze off,a news flash came
