I am still recovering from the shock and joyous news that ason of this city now leads the universal Church. The election of Pope Leo XIV is a momentous occasion for Chicago, the United States, and the entire world. I was watching television at 11:15am last Thursday. I saw the white smoke, but we still didn’t know who the new Pope was at that moment. Then, during noon Mass, a woman approached me at Communion and whispered,“Fr. Greg, the new Pope is Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago. He has chosen the name Leo XIV”.  \nOur new Pope knew he wanted to be a priest from his early school days at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish on Chicago’s South Side. His parents, devout Catholics, encouraged him in his vocation. Chicago is where his roots are, in that small corner of the community where he was raised and flourished. The choice of name reminds us of a critical moment in history. We remember Pope Leo XIII for his forthright stance on social justice; he was a guiding light for the Church’s social doctrine. Pope Leo XIV follows in his footsteps, directing his gaze towards the most vulnerable and marginalized. It is truly a great day for our Church (and he is a White Sox fan!).  \n✠ ✠ ✠  \nSome of us (myself included) have entered the last quarter of life. It is true, God only knows the length of our years and months. I want to share something recently given to me. Great food for thought ... pass it on ...  \nThe Last Quarter of Life  \nYou know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing of years. It seems just yesterday that I was young and embarking on my new life. Yet it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. However, here it is… the last quarter of my life, catching me by surprise.  \nHow did I get here so fast? Where did the years go, and where did my youth go?  \nI remember seeing older people and thinking that they  \nwere years away from me, that I was only in the first quarter, and that the fourth quarter was so far off that I could not visualize it or imagine fully what it would be like. Yet here it is…. my friends are retired and getting gray. They move slower, and I see an older person now. Some are in better shape than I am, but I see a significant change in all of them. They’re not like the ones I remember who were young and vibrant... but like me, their age is beginning to show, and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day, and taking a nap is not a treat anymore. It’s mandatory because if I don’t do it of my own free will, Ifall asleep where I sit.  \nNow I enter this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did. But at least I know that, though I’m in the last quarter and I’m not sure how long it will last, that when it’s over on this earth, it’s over. A new adventure will begin!  \nYes, I have regrets.
