These need to be performed at least one week prior to your procedure so we may receive and review the results. At the time of scheduling your procedure, your surgeon’s office will let you know what, if any, appointments you will need to make to complete your preparation. \n• The Pre-Admission testing nurse will contact you by phone 2-7 days prior to your surgery date to review your medical information. Please have this booklet available when the nurse calls you. The following information will be covered: \n– Medical history and allergies \n– Past surgeries \n– Anesthesia concerns \n– Review of the medications you are taking including dose, time of day, and frequency of all prescription and over the counter meds, and vitamins/supplements/herbals. \n– Discharge planning needs \n– Pre-surgery instructions \n• The nurse will let you know if any additional tests or clearances are required. All testing will need to be completed prior to surgery to avoid cancellation. \n• The Pre-Admission Testing nurse at the main campus can be reached at \n(616) 394-3380 or the Surgery Center nurse at (616) 796-2184. \nHolland Hospital Surgical Handbook \nMedications, Over-the-Counter, Vitamins and Herbal Products \n• Do not take any aspirin products or anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) 5-7 days prior to your procedure (including, but not limited to Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naproxen, etc.) This is important to help reduce the amount of bleeding at the time of surgery. Tylenol/Acetaminophen may be used as appropriate. \n• If you are on blood thinners (i.e. , Coumadin, Plavix, Xarelto, Eliquis, Aspirin, etc), you will need to discuss stopping these medications with your primary care physician or cardiologist. Your doctor will \ndetermine if it is safe to stop the blood thinners before surgery or if you need to ‘bridge’ with lovenox. The exception is if you are having cataract surgery, you do not need to stop them. \n• Discontinue all herbal products (i.e., ginseng, glucosamine, echinacea, ginkgo, fish oil) and vitamin E at least 7 days prior to your procedure date. \n• Please follow these instructions unless instructed otherwise by your surgeon. \nAdditional information \n• If you currently smoke, it is recommended to stop as soon as you are able. Smoking can inhibit proper healing following surgery. It is noted that lungs are improved even within 24 hours of not smoking. \n• If you need help to quit smoking discuss options with your surgeon or primary care physician. You can also call 1-800-QUIT NOW (1-800-784-8669) . This is a free service that connects you with trained coaches who can provide you with information and resources to help you stop smoking. \n• If you are unable to stop, anesthesiologists recommend no smoking or use of any tobacco product after midnight before your surgery. (This includes cigars, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, marijuana or chewing tobacco.) \n• No alcoholic beverages for at least twenty-four hours before and after surgery. \n4 Holland Hospital Surgical Handbook \nPrior to your Surgery \n• Notify your surgeon immediately if you develop any signs or symptoms of illness before surgery. This includes fever, sore throat, cough, cold, infection, pregnancy or any unforeseen circumstances. \n• Notify your surgeon immediately if you have any open sores, wounds or cuts tha","cbCaifHxb14DCrFU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifHxb14DCrFU","pdf",2552088,16,"English","# Before Your Procedure\n## Tests and Medical Clearance\n## Medications, Over-the-Counter, Vitamins and Herbal Products\n## Additional information\n# Prior to your Surgery\n## Arrival time and pre-surgery review\n## Billing and Insurance Information\n## Minor Patients and Legal Guardianship","[{\"question\":\"How far in advance do I need laboratory tests or medical clearance?\",\"answer\":\"Laboratory tests or medical clearance may be required and should be performed at least one week prior to your procedure.
