the first priority whenperforming lifting operations.Anunderstanding of the capabilities andlimitations of the equipment will support this. The safety policy \"If It's Not Safe,Don't DoIt\"is important not only for your safety, butthe safety of your coworkers. \nThe material outlined in this manual outlinesthe requirements of the DOE Hoisting andRigging program. It requires persons whoperform rigging or operate hoistingequipment to be trained to ensure that thepersonnel are competent to perform theoperation. The qualification is for a periodthe three years. The training requires awritten exam and practical demonstration. \nThe requirements for operator training andqualification can be reviewed in the DOEHoisting and Rigging Manual. \n# HOISTING AND RIGGING OBJECTIVES\n\nKNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVES \n□ Explain the qualification requirements ofthe Rigging Training Program. \n□ Demonstrate how to calculate the loadon the sling using the load angle factorfor various load angles. \n□ Explain the proper use and limitations ofthe various rigging equipment andhardware (wire rope, synthetic webslings,shackles,eyebolts,hooks,etc.). \n口Identify the components and describethe characteristics of wire rope andsynthetic slings. \n□ Describe and state what an ordinary liftand critical lift is. \n口Explain the responsibilities of thePerson-In-Charge(PIC)and designatedleader. \n□ Explain safe working practices toconsider when performing hoisting andrigging. \n□ State the requirements for routine andperiodic inspections. \n□ State the proper hand signals usedduring lifting operations. \n# WIRE ROPE SLINGS\n\n2 Wire rope is made up ofthree basic parts:the core, the wire, and the strand. \n3 6×19 \nconstruction.The \nlarger wires on \nthe outside of \neach strand resist \nwear. \nWire Rope consists of three components \n(1): \nThe CORE is the center of the wire rope. The core serves as the foundation to holdthe rope together. \nThere are three types of cores: \n口Fiber-synthetic or sisal, which is theweakest, \n□ Strand-the core is a wire strand, justlike the other strands of the rope. \n口Independent Wire Rope(IWRC)-this isa separate wire rope.It is the strongestof the three types. The core provides7-1/2%strength of the wire rope.Thisis the core used in the wire rope slingsprovided on site. \nThe WIRE is the basic unit of the wire rope. The wires form the strand. Most wire is highcarbon steel, but other material types areavailable. \nThe STRAND is made up of a specificnumber of wires, laid helically around a wirecore. \nThe most common type used at
