IRENE N.ZIEGET \nSamuelS.Fleisher Art Memorial \nPHILADELPHIA,PA. \nSamuel S.Fleisher,c.1915by Leopold Seiffert \nHISTORY OF THE SANCTUARY \nHE edifice now known as the Sanctuary,as early as 1846was an Episcopal Church, called the Church of theEvangelists. The Parish was organized under the leadership ofWilliam Welsh,a prominent Churchman of the time.Associatedwith him were Horace Binney,William H.Newbold,HenryFarnum,Benjamin Mitchell,Dr.Francis West,Edmund Rich-ardson,William Fisher,Henry Austin,Samuel Davies,RobertGraffin,Henry Rodney and others, all citizens well known inPhiladelphia. \nBy 1864 it was consecrated as the Church of the Evangelists.Up to this time the Parish had been reasonably successful, caring for the poorer people as it was intended. But from thisdate until 1880 the cost of repairs upon the Church becameincreasingly difficult to meet and the Directors decided to sellthe property. \nAt this crucial moment a young recently ordained EpiscopalClergyman,Henry Robert Percival, came to the rescue,so tospeak. He saw in the dying Parish the opportunity he wanted, tobuild a church according to his own ideas. \nDr.Percival was born in Philadelphia,April 30,1854,theson of Thomas and Elizabeth Percival. Not too much is knownof Thomas Percival's family, but his wife, who was ElizabethHelmuth, was one of thirteen children.I mention them because \nthis family is deeply woven into the history of the Church of theEvangelists \nCaroline Helmuth,a sister of Elizabeth, was the mother ofErnest Zanzinger. Both he and Dr.Percival were ardentchurchmen. \nMr.Zanzinger was at this period a Vestryman at St.Mark's,while at the same time aiding and encouraging Dr.Percival infurthering his beliefs,as did William Helmuth,a brother ofElizabeth and Caroline, who was a prominent Philadelphiaphysician. \nDr.Percival lived at this time with his family on SpruceStreet and spent his summers with them in Devon.Accordingto the records his mother “destined her son for the ministry.” \nIn 1872 he received his B.A.from the University of Pennsyl-vania.After studying at the General Theological Seminary fora time he withdrew because of ill health but continued hisstudies in private. In 1877 he became a Deacon and in the fol-lowing year a Priest. From that time until 1880 he was AssistantRector at Christ Church. \nDr.Percival asked permission of the Bishops to have a churchof his own and the Church of the Evangelists(at 719 CatharineStreet)was offered to him.The Bishops, knowing Dr.Percivalto be a man of tremendous energy, coupled with great ambition, ample means and influential friends, felt that he could bringback the Parish. \nSo we find him in that year(1880)with a dying Parish onhis hands and, according to the records,\"opposition from out-side influences.”But by 1883,the records indicate that the con-gregation seemed enthusiastic and in accord. This congregationwas drawn from all over the city, largely the friends of Dr.Percival and his family \nSo successfully did he handle the affairs of the Church thatthe debts were paid by 1884 and he was prepared to pull down \nthe old building and replace it by one he had in mind.\"Dr.Percival,the Vestry and certain individuals assumed the respon-sibility but hoped to be relieved of this burden as soon aspossible.”The cornerstone was laid in June 1885. \nDr.Percival had lived in Italy and travelled the Italiancountryside extensively. He had become completely devoted tothe Basilican style of church and was determined, even againstopposition,to have a Basilican Church. \nUp to this time churches in Philadelphia were either Classicalor Gothic and according to Dr.Percival this would be the firstattempt in America to reproduce the later Italian Basilica.Quot-ing from Dr.Percival's records,\"it will have the same relativeproportions of the Cathedra","cbCaitC7Xfvc5ipn","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitC7Xfvc5ipn","pdf",2999753,28,"English","#
