RailroadCompany was the first to obtain a char-ter under which a railroad was actu-ally started, constructed and completedfor the specific purpose of transport-ing passengers and freight, and is stilloperating, for nearly a century, underits original charter name. \nIt was the first railroad to crossthe Allegheny Mountains;the first toissue a time-table;the first to employelectricity as a means of communication, having the first telegraph line in theworld, over which Professor S.F.B. \nMorse sent his first message, andthe first to employ electricityas motive power. \nNew grain grant was the beginning of railroading on theWestern Hemisphere,as_we understand and look upon rail-roading today, for the Baltimore and Ohio was chartered toconstruct two or more sets of rail from Baltimore to the OhioRiver. It was to be a carrier of both freight and passengersand to do and perform all that common carriers of todayare called upon to do—namely,a general transportation busi-ness. \nFor this reason, the charter of the Baltimore and OhioRailroad marked the beginning of a new era in civilization.an era of expansion and development of a nation, the like ofwhich has never been witnessed in the history of the worldAttribute,if you please, this remarkable and astounding growthof a small group of provinces into the solidity and unificationof these United States,to all kinds of causes, but no other onething,no other force,no other agency, has contributed moreto its growth than steam railroad transportation. \nThe Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was to transportation,it might be said, what the Declaration of Independence was tothe forefathers of its founders. The spirit that imbued them wasmuch the same.Although they had no battles to fight, theirswas a great conflict,to compete
