He survives by improvising repairs, rescues strangers trapped by the rising water, and relies on a nightly radio broadcast that trades messages among the scattered communities. Seeking weather, safety, and connection, he waits for Firefly’s transmission and clings to the routines that keep loneliness from becoming unbearable.","His First Rescue \nHenry Dall \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCopyright © 2026 by Henry Dall All rights reserved. \nNo portion of this book may be reproduced in any form without written permission from the publisher or author, except as permitted by U.S. copyright law. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nContents \nChapter One \nChapter Two \nChapter Three \nChapter Four \nChapter Five \nChapter Six \nDon't miss my other harem series \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nChapter One \nTHE WIND QUIT AN hour before sunset, and I caught myself talking to the boat again. \n“Don’t take it personal,” I said, easing the mainsheet as the sail went soft.“You’re still the best thing I own.” \nThe Second Wind didn’t answer. She never did. Forty-two feet of somebody else’s sloop, eighteen months into a delivery I was never going to finish, and she was the longest relationship of my life. I motored the last stretch into the lee of a green hump of island that used to be a hilltop over a town called Fairview, dropped the anchor, and watched the light go copper on the water where the town used to be. \nEighteen months since the Surge. The short version, because nobody told the long one anymore: the ground shook on and off for a month, the sea came up, and it didn’t go back down. In the low places it was still creeping, a foot a year. The coasts of everywhere became the bottom of everywhere. The hills became islands. Everyone who lived through it had a story about where they stood when the water came, and mine was the dumbest one I ever heard, which is why I mostly kept it to myself. \nI was delivering a boat. \nTwenty-seven years old, a yard hand at Marrow Bay who sanded hulls and swapped impellers, and whose one useful talent was showing up. A dentist named Corbin bought a sloop off a listing without ever standing on her deck and wanted her brought down the coast. My boss handed me the keys because I was cheap and available. Week and a half, he said. Don’t scratch her. \nI was two days out when the water came. After that there was no coast to bring her down. No Marrow Bay. No boss. I never found out what happened to the dentist. \nSo the delivery just kept going. That was the truest way I knew how to say it. Captains had papers and somewhere to be. I was a guy who never finished a job, standing at the wheel of a boat that wasn’t mine, learning therest of it one mistake at a time. Eighteen months in, I could reef before I got scared instead of after, fix most of what broke, and read the sky well enough to be wrong only on the big days. Around the islands they knew the boat before they knew me. That suited us both. \nThe work found me more than I found it. I ran mail and seed packets between islands for whoever could trade diesel or rice. I patched pumps. And more times than I could count, I came across somebody the water had backed into a corner. A family on a school roof at Miller ’s Rise. An old man and his terrier riding a capsized hull. I’d pull them out, feed them, put them ashore wherever they asked, and wave off whatever they tried to press on me afterward. Word got around the docks. The sloop that doesn’t charge. It was just the only version of the job that ever made sense to me. \nI went below and put rice on the little gimbaled stove, and while it worked I spun the dial on the receiver and listened to what was left of the world. \nStatic, mostly. A preacher on the far band who never slept. Two fishermen arguing about crab pots like the end of the world had been a minor \ninconvenience. And, where it always was, the loop. \n“...this is Highwater. High ground. Deep wells. Room for those who come in peace. Bearing—” Static chewed the numbers, the way it always did. Then the woman’s voice came around again, flat and recorded, endlessly patient.“This is Highwater. High ground. Deep wells. Room for those who come in peace.” \nEverybody in the islands knew the loop. Nobody had ever found the place. It was a ghost story with a radio fr","cbCaig2mlEPZ231H","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaig2mlEPZ231H","pdf",438643,42,"English","en",105,"# Chapter One\n## Setting and aftermath of the Surge\n## The delivery job that never ends\n## Daily survival and rescues\n## Highwater loop mystery\n## Firefly’s nightly messages","[{\"question\":\"What happened to the world in the Surge, and how does it affect the protagonist?\",\"answer\":\"The Surge shakes the ground for about a month, makes the sea rise permanently, and turns coasts and hills into islands.
