During the week we will have a range of exciting reading activities and we will be visited by different authors. To cover the costs for this week we are asking for a £2.50 donation from each pupil, which can be paid, through Parentpay. \nExtreme Reading Challenge \nThis year we will be running an Extreme Reading Challenge as part of our World Book Week celebrations. Children are invited to take a photograph of themselves reading in the most extreme place they can think of, or doing something extreme while reading. Please be careful though, we don't want any injuries!! There are some amazing examples on the internet (Google Extreme Reading) from reading in a bath full of books, to reading while doing yoga! But can YOU do better and be in with a chance of winning a prize...?!! Please submit your photos to your child’s class teacher by Friday 6th March. Remember to include your child’s full name and class on the back of the photo. \nSecret Storytellers \nWe are also hoping to encourage some parents to come in and read to classes. The idea is that we will have a bank of 'Secret Storytellers' who will volunteer to read a story of their choice to their child's class at 3pm on Thursday 5th March 2020.The children will hear a knock at the door, then they will be greeted by a 'Secret Storyteller' who will bring with thema book to share with the class. If you wish to volunteer, please email the School Office, FAO Mrs Morton (by Friday 28th February) , with your name and the class in which you would like to read a story. If we are inundated with volunteers, we may consider inviting 'Secret Storytellers' into Highfield on other days that week too,(2-6th March) , so if you cannot do Thursday but would like to be involved, please do mention your availability in your email. \nVocabulary Day Thursday 5th March \nAs a school we want to inspire the children to enrich their vocabulary; therefore this year we would like children to dress up as their favourite word – the more creative and unique the better. Building the children’s vocabulary is important as it helps to develop reading comprehension skills and improve spelling and writing. The costume should illustrate the chosen word and the children should learn the definition so that everybody can learn new words throughout the day (you could also include the written definition on a card in case they forget) . There will be prizes for the most obscure and imaginative \nwords. If you look up ‘vocabulary parade ideas’ \nthere are lots of inspiring ideas for fantastic words (incognito, flamboyant, discombobulated.) \nIf children do not wish to participate they can dress as a book character or just wear their normal school uniform. \nBook Drive \nDo you have any unwanted picture or story books at home? We would like to develop alending library for all children across the school. If you have any unwanted books suitable forchildren up to the age of 11 please leave them in the boxes that will be outside the main reception area each morning during Highfield’s World Book Week. \nAuthor visits \nReception, Year 1 and Year 2 Author visit Jeanne Willis Tuesday 3rd March \nThis year as part of our World Book Week celebrations we have been lucky enough to arrange for award-winning children’s author Jeanne Willis to visit. Jeanne is published worldwide and has written over 150 books including picture books, novelty, teen novels and poetry. She was shortlisted for the Whitbread for her novel Naked Without a Hat, won the Smarties Silver for Tadpole's Promise and many more. Jeanne will be reading from a range of her stories to the children and will also be available after school for a book signing session.
