the Far East werecompiled for use in a number of parish magazines lastyear. They are now offered to the Church in thiscountry,in the hope that they may help us to realizenot only the sufferings which our fellow-Christianshave been called to endure, but also the glorious factthat Christ lives as truly in the members of HisMystical Body to-day as in any former period of theChurch's life.R.H. \nI \n# AN ENGLISH PRIESTIN PAPUA\n\nWHEN the Japanese invaded New Guinea in 1942VV the Richon and hic ctaff remained at their noctethe Bishop and his staff remained at their posts.Eight of them lost their lives as a direct resultof this decision. The following account, written by aRoman Catholic medical officer, tells how VivianRedlich,a young English priest, met his death inAugust of that year. \n* * * * \n# DARK DAYS\n\nThey were dark days for us all,but perhaps fornone so dark as for that heroic little band of Anglican \n# HEROES OF THE CHURCH To-DAY\n\nmissionaries who, quite voluntarily, had decided thattheir duty to their God and to the people bade themremain at their posts.I had the privilege of knowingeach of them, and admire their missionary spirit thatprompted them to make a decision so much opposedto the dictates of self-interest. \nSaturday,July 25th,1942,is a day I shall not easilyforget.Early that day I had escaped from theJapanese, mainly through the help of one of theSangara mission boys.Much to my surprise,I learnedfrom the natives that Fr.Redlich, who a couple ofmonths previously had returned very ill to the missionheadquarters, was again in the district, and in hidingquite close to the mission house.Just on dusk Ireached his shelter. The village people had built hima lean-to on the side of a hill, and had posted watchersalong the track. \n# THE STRUGGLE ON THE BEACH\n\nFrom Fr.Vivian I learnt that in the mission boathe had arrived at Oro Bay as the Japanese wereshelling Buna.By working hard,he landed duringthe night fifteen tons of supplies and concealed themin the bush.He spoke of the tremendous struggle hehad with himself on the beach.Would he return withthe boat or not?He admitted that his nature shrankfrom the sacrifice, and with a sinking heart he stoodon the beach and watched the boat that might haveborne him, too,to safety sail out of the
