The stories and descriptions of womenled societies in Herlands come from me personally visiting locations and/or speaking with multiple people who have and had direct access to them, sharing their stories as they remembered them. As much as possible, I’ve used direct quotes from recorded interviews, emails and texts. Every effort has been made to preserve the original language, tone and intent of the speakers. In some instances, quotations have been minimally edited for clarity without compromising their meaning. Throughout the book, I’ve aimed to standardise the spellings of non-English words, though many have multiple variations and readers from those regions may be more familiar with different versions.  \nAll people interviewed have given their informed consent to be in this book, although some names and details have been changed to protect their identities, especially those who still live in private women-led spaces. The changed names are indicated by an asterisk (*) .  \nTo tell the stories of historical women’s societies, I’ve used archival material, news clippings and secondary testimonies.  \nMy goal is to share stories with balance that reflect the dignity and autonomy of people, as well as addressing the traumas they’ve experienced. There are some descriptions of physical and emotional abuse that readers may find upsetting.  \nAustralian First Nations people should be aware that Chapter 1 may contain knowledge passed on by deceased persons. I have attempted to convey some ancient First Nations laws, while trying to avoid the use of deceased people’s names, due to the belief that it may disturb their spirits. I have also asked journalists I know from corresponding regions and identities to read and advise on sections of the book where I write about  \ncultures that are not my own. While individual voices matter, no single person can speak for the full range of experiences that women live through.
