schoolgirl knows that Henry Purcell, one of thegreatest composers in English history, lies buried in West-minster Abbey, where he was organist for the last sixteenyears of his short life. But no one knows with certaintywhere or when he was born,or where his family camefrom. One tradition has it that he was descended froman Irish branch of the Purcells, whose ancestry has beentraced back to the time of William the Conqueror.Anothersays that he came of a Shropshire pedigree, whose familycoat of arms had the three boars'heads which are alsofound on the title-page of one of Purcell's compositions.Legend relates that he was born in Westminster, wherehe is presumed to have passed most of his life.It was avery strange Westminster,or would seem so to the eyesof a modern Londoner. To the north and west lay greenfields, and southwards, the river, fringed with the mansion-houses of the rich and noble, carried the merchandise toand from the City and also served as the easiest highwayfor people journeying thither. \nPurcell was born some time in the summer or autumnof 1659—so much we can deduce from the inscription onhis memorial at Westminster and from corroborativesources. There were actually three Henrys in the adjacentgenerations. One,the son of the composer,we need notbe concerned with, because he died in infancy,as did othersof Purcell's children. But Henry Purcell the Elder, ashe is called,to distinguish him from his famous namesake, interests us more closely. It has always been assumedthat he was the composer's father, and we know that hehad a brother,Thomas, who would, therefore,be the \nuncle of Henry the Younger. The elder Henry died inI664,when Purcell was only five years of age,and thestory goes that the boy was thereupon put under the careof his uncle, who was already an established musician, well up in Court circles, and a member of the ChapelRoyal choir (of which more anon). \nNow,there is a very interesting letter which ThomasPurcell wrote to a certain reverend gentleman namedJohn Gostling, who was a member of the King's Chapelat this time, and who possessed a bass voice of remarkabledepth.(Purcell, when he grew up,wrote many strikingsolos for him by way of compliment to his low notes.)This, then,is part of the letter which Thomas Purcellwrote to the Rev.Mr.Gostling in February 1679,whenthe young composer was nearing his twentieth year: \n“Sir,—I have received the favour of yours of the4th with the enclosed for my son Henry....My sonis composing wherein you will be chiefly concerned.” \nAnd he adds a footnote,of a flattering nature,in whichhe explains that young Henry's composition will notomit some of those low notes for which the eminent singerwas so famous. It will be seen that Thomas twice refersto Henry as“my son.\"He does not say\"my adoptedson”or“my nephew,”and reading the text literally, onewould say that Thomas meant what he said and thatHenry was really his son, unless we are to make the far-fetched assumption that there was still another HenryPurcell, also a composer! The facts, then, all point tothe conclusion that the subject of this letter was the HenryPurcell who became famous. \nWhether Thomas was,or was not,Henry's father, thefact is that the young man was exceptionally well placed,by his family connections, with a view to securing a musicaleducation and the prospect of an introduction to themusical circles of his time. Both his father and his uncle(whichever they were)were musicians and were employed","cbCaioNxCIvUcSBT","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioNxCIvUcSBT","pdf",885450,24,"English","# Life and Legend\n##
