It was a mesh of teeth-rattling lows and blood-curdling highs. A deep roar resting atop a piercing screech. It came from a single beast. And the beast was right behind them. They all froze as their faceplate HUDs searched through the trees – an infrared and nightvision signal – for what had made the sound. Soon, the initial call was answered by a second. A bleating, frightened cry that put the first roar in context.  \nCall, answer.  \nPredator, prey.  \nHunter, hunted.  \nThe three researchers were safe, for now, but they had to get out of the war zone.  \n“This way,” Anna said, speaking quietly over her mic and nodding her head in a particular direction.“South, southwest. Point-oh-three.”  \nThe other two men, along with the fourth member of the team still back at the facility, heard her quiet voice loud and clear over the faceplate speakers.  \n“Copy that,” the two men in the field said almost simultaneously.  \n“It’s almost dinner time,” Anna said, before creeping off in the direction she had indicated.“And I don’t want to be here when all hell breaks loose.”  \n* *  \nIn the control room, Davis Brighton was watching the action unfold. He was an older man by industry standards – well into his 50s – with graying hair around his temples and a shock of gray hair in his beard all across his chin. The rest of his hair was jet black and close cropped. As close cropped as his equipment would allow him to keep it.  \nOne of the men, Nick Jennings, had simply let his beard grow for the last four months. It was starting to interfere with the negative pressure seal of his personal protective equipment, PPE, which included a hypertechnological faceplate that provided both fresh oxygen and a detailed heads-up display, HUD, across the visual field.  \nDavis stood in the control room of Facility Four – why it wasn’t given a more creative name, he never understood. Facility Four was built by Allied Genetics on a peninsula with a wide expanse of earth removed to create a man-made island. Peninsula plus giant moat. The facility stood in a body of water that they believed would become the Black Sea. Eventually. It was a circular structure full of reinforced concrete and foot-thick acrylic windows. Collectively, it was miles ahead of any facility anywhere on Earth. That wasn’t the most impressive part, though.  \nThe facility existed 100 million years in the past.  \nIn present day, Allied Genetics researchers had found a strange rift in time and space. By using a series of complex technical procedures, they were able to exploit this rift and send numerous teams of researchers, scientists and soldiers to explore the Cretaceous. In ancient Crimea they observed never-before-excavated dinosaurs and evidence of a super-ancient civilization.  \nThrough a communications mishap, four researchers were left behind during a mission failure. The team had been sent to examine and, if possible, retrieve a mysterious energy signature tied to the ancient civilization – a group of buildings referred to as “The Ruins”. The mission went south and the survivors made their way to the island. They must have been assumed dead, though, because no dedicated response team had ever come back for them. Now, four months later, they still hadn’t given up hope of returning to modern civilization.  \nThe four scientists had maintained a brain-storm list of ways to get back.
