These assessments measure student understanding of the Hawai‘i Common Core standards – rigorous and challenging learning expectations in reading, writing, listening, and mathematics. Students in grades 3–8 and 11 took the Smarter Balanced Assessments, which provide you, your child, and your child’s teachers with valuable information about whether your child is meeting grade \nlevel expectations. The results will provide an important measure of how well your child is progressing toward graduating ready for college and a career. \nThis report also describes the content of the assessments that put more emphasis on writing, solving problems and critical thinking. They were created specifically to measure students’ progress toward mastery of the Hawai‘i academic standards. Hawai‘i collaborated with other states to create these more rigorous standards, and over the past few years, teachers have used them to guide and inform their teaching practice. \nWe encourage you to use this report to start a conversation with your child’s teacher about their progress in school.
