the Order of the HolyCross is the effort to help the clergy of the Church withtheir spiritual lives and problems. Some 500 of theseclergy are Priests Associate or Oblates of the Order.Realiz-ing the difficulties connected with daily meditation(a re-quirement of their Rule of Life),the Order decided to con-duct a “meditation clinic”for clergy at Holy Cross Mon-astery,West Park,New York. \nA“clinic”is a place where one can take his aches andpains for diagnosis and treatment. The plan was that inter-ested clergy could come to a quiet, restful, spiritual atmos-phere,describe their “symptoms”and get their difficultiesout onto the table where they could be dealt with. The“physician”conducting the clinic would then recommendtreatment:corrective surgery or preventive medicine,as thecase might require. It was also hoped that the “patients”might receive the benefit of helps and suggestions of theirfellow clergy gained through actual experience in the prac-tice of daily meditation. \nTo discover some of the aches and pains connected withmeditation, and to secure the helpful suggestions of thosewho have had some degree of success in the practice, asearching questionnaire was sent out to clergy in our east-ern province. It announced the date of the clinic and in-vited reservations. The response was so immediate andoverwhelming that three clinics had to be scheduled. \nMany basic aches and pains were brought out into theopen and dealt with.Because these are universally experi-enced,the clergy asked that our findings be shared. This \nbooklet is our effort to do that.It is offered not only toclergy and those preparing for priesthood, but to ALLCHRISTIANS.It is offered to you as a little handbook ofpractical helps with some of the problems you may be en-countering as you practice meditation. It is not exhaustiveof course. We have condensed the material into brief andsuccinct form, avoiding the use of much technical language, seeking to make the result simple and readable and aboveall practical. We have also tried to recapture something ofthe personal and intimate quality of the clinics, addressingyou directly and quoting frequently the patients'own wordsin describing their symptoms and problems. \nGrateful acknowledgement is made to all whose thoughtsand ideas appear in these pages. The “physician”makes noclaim to originality. Many of these ideas and recommenda-tions have been garnered through wide reading, and it istherefore impossible to remember sources and give specificcredit for all of them.Special gratitude, however,is ex-pressed for the thoughts and ideas suggested by MartinThornton,O.G.S.,in Christian Proficiency;for The Spirit-ual Letters of Dom John Chapman,O.S.B.;and the worksof St.John of the Cross. We gratefully acknowledge per-mission of the publishers to quote copyright matter repro-duced from The Spiritual Letters of Dom John Chapman, \n0.S.B.,by Dom John Chapman, published by Sheed &Ward,Inc.,1946.” \nAll is offered to the glory of God and for the assistanceof our readers in their spiritual pilgrimage. We dedicatethis booklet to all parish priests, under the patronage of theblessed Cure D'Ars,their patron saint. \nLEE STEVENS,O.H.C. \nSt.Michael's MonasterySt.Andrew's,Tennessee \nFeast of
