\na bethinking booklet \n# Has sciencedisproved God?\n\nVY AIM in this booklet is to explainwhyd tbinkit roaconablo to boliouowny i think it reasonable to believein God in the face of science. But thathas not always been my view.In fact, asan 18-year-old,I wrote a poem toexpress my contempt for Christianity. You have to understand that I wasstudying Natural Sciences at university, not English Literature, and so my poemhas limited literary merit! But here it is: \nSome folk seem to find it oddThat people grow from tiny cells.Pathetic:those who think of GodAnd still drop coins in wishingwells. \nMy view of Christians back then wasthat they must be naive, superstitiousand ignorant.Clearly they didn't \nunderstand the very basics of science.Sure, people used to think God made \nlife-but then we came to understandabout DNA and cell division and how itall happens.People used to think Godmade it rain with a big watering can inthe sky,but then someone figured outevaporation and condensation and thewater cycle. We used to think thatpeople recover from illness by magicbut now we understand about virusesand antibodies. And so now it's time togrow up,and to throw off childish ideasof God and the supernatural. \nThat's what l used to think, but not whatI think now. \n# Has\n\nscience madeChristianityimpossiblefor thinkingpeople? \nThe idea that science has madethe Christian faith impossible forintellectually responsible people istrumpeted everywhere today by theSO-called \"new atheists\".The thesis ofbooks such as Richard Dawkins'TheGod Delusion,Peter Atkins'On Beingand Stephen Hawking's The GrandDesign is that science explains theuniverse and so there is no need tobelieve in God. \nBut such an assumption wasn't sharedby those who got science started. If youlook at history, some of the greatest \nscientists were theists:Johannes Kepler, who described the laws of planetarymotion and said famously that he was\"thinking God's thoughts afterhim1;Michael Faraday, who \ndiscovered electricity;Isaac Newton, who formulated the theory of gravitation;Charles Babbage, who built the firstmechanical computer;Louis Pasteur, who discovered the microbe;RobertBoyle, who came up with those \nannoying gas laws we had to learn forA-Level chemistry.According to SirAlfred North Whitehead, the eminenthistorian of science,it was because theybelieved in a divine law-giver that theysought law in nature in the first place.Ifthey had believed,as some believetoday, that the universe waspurposeless and accidental,it is \nquestionable whether they would everhave tried to understand it.No,it was onthe basis of the conviction that God hadordered and designed the universe thatscience flourished in the western worldfrom the 16th century onwards. \nBut what about the 21st century?Whilethey are not in the majority, manyscientists today identify themselves asChristians, some of them at the top oftheir profession. So when I joined achurch in Cambridge, soon afterbecoming a Christian,I found myselfsharing a pew with Bob White, the \nProfessor of Geophysics. Then my bestfriend's Geology tutor,Professor SimonConway Morris, turned out to be aChristian too.People say that you can'tbelieve in God because of the fossilsand the dinosaurs, but ProfessorConway Morris knows more aboutfossils than most people on the planetand seems to have no difficulty.Whatabout molecular biology? The same yearthat The God Delusion was published,Francis Collins, the director of theHuman Genome Project (the projectresponsible for determining thecomplete human DNA sequence),published abook which outlined hisChristian beliefs. It certainly doesn'tseem to be the case that if you're aserious scientist you cannot be a serious \nChristian.I want to suggest that thisis because science by itself does notoffer a knockdown argument againstChristianity. \n# How do\n\nyou defineScience? \nLet me warn you about a possible biasin your thinking at this point. If you definescience atheistically, then you won't findit compatible with ","cbCaiui08tcRbhVB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiui08tcRbhVB","pdf",1413993,36,"English","# Has science disproved God?\n## Has science made Christianity impossible for thinking people?\n## How do you define Science?","[{\"question\":\"What is the main purpose of the booklet?\",\"answer\":\"To explain why the author thinks it is reasonable to believe in God in the face of science, arguing that science itself does not provide a decisive argument against Christianity.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the author respond to the claim that “new atheists” say science makes Christianity impossible?\",\"answer\":\"The author argues the assumption is unfounded, noting that many foundational scientists were theists and that real scientific seriousness has not prevented Christians from being competent researchers.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the author mean by “define science atheistically” being biased?\",\"answer\":\"The author warns that if science is set up to count only explanations excluding God or the supernatural, then science cannot fairly rule out what its detector or framework was designed not to measure.\"}]","Has science disproved God?
