Somewhere inside those green rows, a twisting path curls into shapes you can't see from the ground: a giant spider, a tractor, maybe your state's outline. This is a corn maze, and every fall thousands of families in the United States pay to get pleasantly, laughingly lost in one. How does a whole picture get hidden inside a farm field?
The answer starts long before the corn is even planted. A farmer or a maze designer draws the pattern on a computer, the same way you might sketch on a tablet, and turns it into a map full of exact points. In the field, workers use GPS, the same satellite system that helps a car find directions, to mark where each path should go. Then, when the corn is only knee-high in early summer, they cut away the plants along the lines so the rest can grow up into thick green walls.
Those walls are why corn is the perfect plant for the job. By late summer, the stalks can shoot up to eight or ten feet tall, way over your head, so you truly cannot peek over the top to cheat. Some large mazes are cut into fields that cover several acres, with more than a mile of winding trail packed inside. Getting through one can take an hour or more, which is why farms hand out maps and station helpers on tall platforms to rescue anyone who gives up.
Getting lost on purpose is only one reason those farms are so busy in October. A corn maze is usually part of a bigger harvest festival, a celebration of the crops brought in at the end of the growing season. People have gathered to give thanks for the harvest for thousands of years, in many different cultures around the world. Today an American farm might add hayrides on a rumbling tractor, a pumpkin patch where you pick your own jack-o'-lantern, and cider pressed from fresh apples.
All of that turns an ordinary farm into a fall destination, and the timing is no accident. October is when the corn has finished growing and the pumpkins have turned bright orange, so farmers open their fields to visitors and earn money right when the crops are ripe. The first big American maze fields appeared in the 1990s, which makes this whole tradition younger than many of the grown-ups walking through it. So the next time you're lost between two walls of corn, remember: someone drew that puzzle on a screen
before the seeds ever touched the soil.
Harvest Festivals and Corn Mazes
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) What is the main idea of this passage?
A.
