These players, clad only in shorts designed, apparently, to maximize muscle exposure, are weighed and measured as the audience looks on. As guarded whispers are exchanged, results are tabulated, and judgments are passed, the collective effort to maintain an atmosphere of high—almost scientific—seriousness is palpable. Once this process is complete, each player steps down from the stage, traces of mild discomfort playing across a few faces. In the aftermath, one player confides to the camera that the scene is a meat market and he’s glad it’s over. \nAlthough the accumulation of empirical data—height, weight, wingspan etc.—is the ostensive purpose of this event, it goes without saying that the same information could easily be gathered by more modest, less theatrical means. But the men in the audience are not only interested in data. They are disciples of the myth that athletic prowess and potential are not a matter of weight and measure alone; appearance counts, too. They are in search of the candidate colloquially known as a “specimen,”and the only way to identify such a candidate is through close looking (one of the few procedures that NFL scouts and art historians have in common). This myth hinges on the notion that ability is visible—that it can be recognized and represented, as it were—not just through performance but through appearance. \nT","cbCairWAjqc2e8Ui","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairWAjqc2e8Ui","pdf",1372582,"English","# Hard Targets Exhibition Overview\n## Exhibition Lineage and Organization\n## Support, Funding, and Acknowledgments\n# Featured Works and Visual Context\n## Front and Back Cover Works\n## Selected Artwork Notes\n# Interpreting Masculinity, Performance, and Evaluation","[{\"question\":\"What is Hard Targets and how is it related to other exhibitions?\",\"answer\":\"Hard Targets is a revised presentation that builds on Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sports, which itself expands Contemporary Projects 11: Hard Targets—Masculinity and Sports.
