The analysis challenges Harari’s claim that secular humanism fractured into three hostile ‘sects’ driving twentieth-century totalitarianism and rapacious capitalism. By tracing alleged chronological anachronisms and conceptual conflations, the essay argues that the empirical historical record contradicts Harari’s narrative. It also addresses Harari’s response to critics and reviews humanism across historical epochs.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":40,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/research-report/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/hararis-humanist-horror-story-why-history-matters/661633/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/hararis-humanist-horror-story-why-history-matters/661633.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Terk","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-30","2026-10-28",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":24},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What core thesis does the essay challenge in Harari’s work?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"The essay challenges Harari’s thesis that secular humanism is effectively a religion that split into three warring ‘sects’ responsible for major twentieth-century atrocities and forms of capitalism.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"How does the author argue against Harari’s historical account?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"The author scrutinizes Harari’s framework by identifying alleged chronological anachronisms and conceptual conflations, arguing the historical record flatly contradicts Harari’s narrative.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"Does the essay address criticisms and Harari’s replies?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"Yes. This essay subjects Harari’s historical taxonomy to critical scrutiny, contesting his arresting thesis that humanism fractured into three warring, tyrannical ‘sects’ responsible for twentieth-century totalitarianism and rapacious capitalism. By identifying profound chronological anachronisms and conceptual conflations within Harari’s framework, this analysis disentangles these systemic misinterpretations. Ultimately, this critique demonstrates that the empirical historical record flatly contradicts Harari’s narrative, thereby vindicating the historical evolution and legacy of humanism.\u003Cbr>To cite this essay:\u003Cbr>Allan, Leslie 2026. Introduction \nIf you have read Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind or its sequel Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, you will appreciate why they have captivated so many readers. Harari writes with rare fluency, sweeping across tens of thousands of years and stitching together history, anthropology, biology and economics into a story that feels both grand and effortless. I was initially among those who found this sweeping narrative exhilarating. Yet exhilaration is no guarantee of accuracy, and even an acclaimed bestselling author can get the story terribly wrong and in ways that do real damage to reputations that are not his own. \nThe reputations I have in mind belong to humanists. In Sapiens and Homo Deus, Harari advances an arresting thesis: that humanism, in spite of its secular posture, is really just another religion, one that fractured into three warring ‘sects’ and then waged, in his phrase, ‘the bloodiest wars of religion in history’.
