Foreword\n\nDEPENDABLE tools or instruments are indispensable to the capable artisan. This isespecially true of any artist whose livelihood is dependent upon the spoken word, andin matters of pronunciation this book should be a valuable aid.Outstanding publicspeakers and performers on the air or in the theater, all know that a successful per-formance may often depend not so much on what you say,as \"how you say it.\"Tosay it well frequently may involve voice quality, inflection,or speech melody, andemotion. But a prime requisite at all times is correct pronunciation. \nThe many thousands of words listed in this book should cover most pronunciationproblems. Some of the words are familiar and it might be well to give considerationto these familiar words. Many persons may be surprised—on checking a familiarword—to learn that the present-day pronunciation is different from that learned inschool some decades ago. \nOurs is a living language, constantly adapting itself to changing customs andworld conditions.Recurring warfare and the speed of modern communication meth-ods,have resulted in the addition to our language of many foreign words and placenames hitherto seldom used in our everyday speech. \nThe responsibility now placed upon speakers, radio announcers, and commenta-tors is greater than ever before.Audiences are becoming more critical in their de-mands for the use of correct pronunciation by the broadcasters.Freqsently the timeelement may prevent a newscaster from going to the library to solve a pronunciationproblem, and on such occasions this book should be of great value. It is not cumber-some,but its comprehensiveness will aid the speaker in avoiding the embarrassmentof a performance marred by faulty pronunciation. \nThis book gives only one pronunciation. This is not an attempt to be arbitrary butrather a sincere effort to.clarify our pronunciation problems)and still maintain thathigh standard of speech which is the desire of cultivated people. The National Broad-casting Company sincerely hopes that this book will be of real service. \nPAT KELLY \nSupervisor of AnouncersNational Broadcasting Company \n√ \n## Preface to Second Edition\n\nTHE SECOND edition of the NBC Handbook of Pronnciation is different from thefirst edition in six main ways: \nI.The second edition contains many new entries.Approximately 20 per cent ofthe total are not in the first edition. Most of these additions are scientific terms andproper names, especially of prominent men and women of the United States andthroughout the world. Many of the words are difficult enough to test the skill of vet-eran announcers.A random sampling of these words makes a rugged test of an an-nouncer's knowledge of current developments and events. The total number ofentries is more than I5,285;that of the first edition, about I2,000.Recently,EricSevareid shared his pronunciation problems with his radio audience.Said he: \n\"We got on to Stromboli fairly quickly, but sometimes,as in the case of Hiro-shima,listeners won't let you do right by the dictionary and accuse you of being toohigh-toned for your britches. But a broadcaster's real misery concerns the listener'shome town. For example,it's plainly vair SIGH*in France, but just as plainlyver SAYLZ in Kentu","cbCaie0IJ7hT7lo5","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaie0IJ7hT7lo5","pdf",21656224,392,"English","#
