Hand Bending\n\n## Objectives\n\ngain the skills necessary for proper conduit bend-ing and installation. You will be able to practiceconduit bending in the lab and in the field underthe supervision of experienced coworkers. In thismodule, the techniques for using hand-operatedand step conduit benders such as the hand benderand the hickey will be covered. The processes ofhand bending, cutting, reaming, and threadingconduit will also be explained. \nWhen you have completed this module, you willbe able to do the following: \n1.Identify the methods of hand bending conduit. \n2.Identify the various methods used to installconduit. \n3.Use math formulas to determine conduit bends. \n4.Make 90°bends,back-to-back bends, offsets, kicks, and saddle bends using a hand bender. \n5.Cut,ream,and thread conduit. \n## 2.0.0◆ HAND BENDING EQUIPMENT\n\nPrerequisites \nFigure 1 shows hand benders.Hand benders areconvenient to use on the job because they areportable and no electrical power is requiredHand benders have a shape that supports thewalls of the conduit being bent. \nBefore you begin this module,it is recommendedthat you successfully complete the following:Core Curriculum;Residential Electrical I,Chap-ters 1 through 8. \nThese benders are used to make various bends insmaller-size conduit(\"to 1%4\").Most hand bendersare sized to bend rigid conduit and electrical metal-lic tubing(EMT)of corresponding sizes. For exam-ple,a single hand bender can bend either3/\"EMTor Z/\"rigid conduit. The next larger size of handbender will bend either 1\"EMT or³/\"rigid conduit. This is because the corresponding sizes of conduithave nearly equal outside diameters. \n## Required Trainee Materials\n\n1.Paper and pencil \n2.Copy of the latest edition of the National Elec-trical Code® \n3.Appropriate personal protective equipment \n## 1.0.0◆ INTRODUCTION\n\nThe first step in making a good bend is familiar-izing yourself with the bender. The manufacturer ofthe bender will typically providedocumentation in-dicating starting points, distance between offsets, gains, and other important values associated with \nThe art of conduit bending is dependent upon theskills of the electrician and requires a workingknowledge of basic terms and proven proceduresPractice, knowledge, and training will help you \nNote:National Electrical Code@and Electrical Code. \n## Working with Conduit\n\nUnprotected electrical cable is susceptible to moisture and physical damage;therefore, protect the wiring with conduit. \n## Bending Conduit\n\nA good way to practice bending conduit is to use a piece of No.10 or No.12 solid wireand bend it to resemble the bends you need. This gives you some perspective on howto bend the conduit and it will also help you to anticipate any problems with the bends. \n102F01.EPS \nFigure 1◆Hand benders. \nthat particular bender. There is no substitute for tak-ing the time to review this information. It will makethe job go faster and result in better bends. \nCAUTION \nWhen making bends,be sure you have a firmgrip on the handle to avoid slippage and possibleinjury. \nWhen performing a bend,it is important tokeep the conduit on a stable, firm, flat surface forthe entire duration o the bend.Hand benders aredesigned to have force applied using one foot andthe hands.See Figure 2.It is important to use con-stant foot pressure as well as force on the handleto achieve uniform bends.Allowing the conduit torise up or performing the bend on soft ground canresult in distorting the conduit outside the bender. \n102F02.EPS \nFigure 2◆ Pushing down on the bender to complete thebend. \n## Note\n\nBends should be made in accordance with theguidelines of NEC®Article 342(intermediatemetal conduit or IMC),Article 344(rigid metalconduit or RMC),Article 352(rigid nonmetallicconduit or RNC),or Article 358(electricalmetallic tubing
