Kids in costumes ring the doorbells and shout"Trick or treat!" This is Halloween, and it happens every year on October 31. In the United States and Canada, families carve funny faces into pumpkins called jack-o'-lanterns and fill bags with candy.
Those glowing pumpkins did not always start out as pumpkins at all. Long ago in Ireland and Scotland, people carved scary faces into turnips instead, because turnips grew there. When many Irish and Scottish families moved to America, they found that big orange pumpkins were easier to carve. So the pumpkin jack-o'-lantern we know today came from an old custom that crossed the ocean!
Dressing up came from those same old countries, too. People once believed that wearing a costume, or a disguise, would help them blend in on this special night. In the United Kingdom, children played a game called "guising," where they had to sing a song or tell a joke before they got a treat. Today, kids still show off costumes, but most just say "trick or treat" and grab their candy.
Halloween keeps spreading to new places far from where it began. In Japan and Germany, people now hold Halloween parties and wear costumes, eventhough the holiday is fairly new there. It is important to know that some fall holidays, like Mexico's Day of the Dead, are their very own celebrations with their own meaning, not Halloween. Here is a sweet surprise: a National Retail Federation survey found that candy is one of the things Americans buy most for Halloween each year!
Halloween Around the World
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) On what date does Halloween happen each year?
A.
