Why the costumes? The people there celebrated a festival called Samhain (say it "SOW-in"), when they believed the line between summer and winter was thinnest, and they dressed up so any wandering spirits wouldn't recognize them. That autumn festival, shaped over many years and blended with a Christian holiday called All Hallows' Eve, slowly grew into the Halloween we know today. So the holiday you enjoy each October began asa bonfire night in the fields of Ireland and Scotland.
Those old disguises were the great-great-grandparents of the costumes kids wear now, but the trip across the ocean changed everything. In the 1800s, many Irish and Scottish families moved to the United States and Canada and brought their October customs with them. Once there, the holiday picked up new ideas, and "trick-or-treating"—kids going door to door for candy—became popular in North America in the mid-1900s. Today Americans spend billions of dollars on candy, costumes, and decorations every fall, according to the National Retail Federation.
All that candy needs something to be carried in, and that brings us to the glowing jack-o'-lantern on the porch. Believe it or not, people in Ireland and Scotland first carved scary faces into turnipsand beets, not pumpkins! When the custom reached North America, folks discovered that pumpkins were bigger, softer, and far easier to carve, so the pumpkin took over. A story was once told about aman named Jack who wandered with a glowing coal inside a hollowed turnip, and that legend gave the carved lantern its name.
The pumpkin isn't the only thing that looks different from one country to the next. In Scotland and parts of Ireland, children once went "guising," performing a song, joke, or poem to earn a treat instead of simply asking for one. Across the ocean in Mexico, families celebrate the Day of the Dead around the same time, but it is its own holiday with its own meaning—a warm time to remember loved ones, not a version of Halloween. Bobbing for apples, a game where you try to grab floating apples with your teeth, has been a party favorite in the British Isles for hundreds of years.
From apples in Britain we jump all the way to Japan, where Halloween is oneof the newest arrivals of all. In Japan, the holiday only became popular in recent decades, spreading through movies, theme parks, and shops selling costumes. In Tokyo, thousands of people in costumes now gather in the Shibuya neighborhood each October just to see one another's outfits. It's a funny thought: a night that started with farmers in Irish fields has traveled so far that people now dress up together on a busy street in Japan.
Halloween Around the World
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.
