That turnip was the great-great-grandparent of the plastic pumpkin bucket you carry today. This was Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest, when people in Ireland and Scotland believed the line between the living and the dead grew thin. They lit huge bonfires, wore disguises, and left food outside to keep unfriendly spirits at bay. From these customs grew the holiday now celebrated across dozens of countries, though it looks remarkably different depending on where you stand. \nThose disguises the Celts wore have never really gone away, but where they came from is a question historians still argue about. One popular explanation says trick-or-treating descends directly from a medieval practice called \"souling,\" when poor people went door to door offering prayers in exchange for small cakes. Another connects it to \"guising\" in Scotland, where children performed a song or joke to earn a treat. The truth is that the modern American version, with its shouted \"trick or treat,\" only became widespread in the mid-twentieth century. So a tradition that feels ancient is, in its familiar form, younger than many people's grandparents. \nIf costumes traveled from the old world to the new, the pumpkin made the opposite journey and became a symbol shipped back across the ocean. When Irish and Scottish immigrants arrived in North America in the 1800s, they discovered pumpkins, which were far larger and easier to carve than turnips. The name jacko'-lantern comes from an old Irish legend about a man named Jack who, the story goes, was doomed to wander the night with only a burning coal to light his way. Today Americans buy well over a billion dollars'worth of candy for the holiday each year, according to National Retail Federation surveys. The carved pumpkin has become such a fixture that it now glows on porches in countries that had no such custom a generation ago. \nThat glow has spread to places you might not expect, and Japan offers one of the strangest examples. In Tokyo, Halloween has become a massive street event centered not on children collecting candy but on young adults gathering in elaborate costumes, especially around the Shibuya district. There is little trick-or-treating; instead the appeal is the spectacle of dressing up in public, something the culture normally reserves for special occasions. Germany has seen a similar rise since the 1990s, when costume parties and decorations began appearing in shops. In both places the holiday arrived largely through movies, marketing, and a taste for a good party, rather than through any \nold harvest tradition. \nNot every autumn celebration with candles and remembrance is a version of Halloween, and confusing them is a common mistake. Mexico's Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, falls on the first two days of November and is a joyful, deeply meaningful time when families honor relatives who have died with marigolds, food, and decorated altars. It shares the calendar with Halloween but grew from Indigenous and \nCatholic roots that have nothing to do with Samhain's bonfires. Japan's Obon, held in summer, and the Christian observances of All Saints' and All Souls' Days are likewise their own holidays with their own histories. Treating any of these as merely \"another Halloween\" erases what makes each one distinct. \nEven in the lands where it began, the holiday keeps shifting and surprising people. In parts of Ireland today you can still find barmbrack, a fruit-studded bread baked with small objects hidden inside, where the ring you find supposedly predicts your future. Scottish children once carried lanterns carved from turnips called \"neeps,\" a chore so tough that switching to pumpkins must have felt like a holiday in itself. The United Kingdom's celebrations were long overshadowed by Guy Fawkes N","cbCaigdoJQ7F8sBC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigdoJQ7F8sBC","pdf",111494,"English","# Halloween Around the World\n## Origins and Celtic Samhain\n## Souling and guising to modern trick-or-treat\n## Pumpkin symbolism and the “jack-o’-lantern” legend\n## Halloween in Japan and Germany\n## Distinguishing Halloween from other autumn holidays\n## Traditions within Ireland, Scotland, and the UK","[{\"question\":\"What did ancient Celtic farmers carve and light to guard their doorways?\",\"answer\":\"They carved a scary face into a turnip and placed a glowing ember inside it.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is the passage’s point about mid-twentieth-century trick-or-treat important?\",\"answer\":\"It shows that Halloween may feel ancient, but its familiar American form became widespread only relatively recently.\"},{\"question\":\"What distinguishes Mexico’s Day of the Dead from Halloween according to the passage?\",\"answer\":\"It is rooted in Indigenous and Catholic traditions unrelated to Samhain’s bonfires, and it honors relatives with marigolds, food, and decorated altars.\"}]","Halloween Around the World - Name: | PDF",1790807008,15]
