The guide then transitions into practical reading rules, showing how a single image (e.g., a mouth) can function as a complete word or as a phonetic sound, ending with an invitation to write personal names in hieroglyphs.","Half-Hour Hieroglyphs \nDiscover how the ancient Egyptian system of hieroglyphs works, then write your own name in hieroglyphs \n[VoicesOfAncientEgypt.com](VoicesOfAncientEgypt.com) \nWelcome! \nIf you’re interested in ancient Egypt, then I’m so glad you’re here because learning about hieroglyphs will unlock so much about ancient Egyptian life. \nIn the next 30 minutes or so, you’ll discover how hieroglyphs work and you’ll write your own name in Egyptian hieroglyphs. \nHi, I’m Melinda \nOr, written another way: \nI’ve written this guide to give you a quick, but detailed introduction to the system of hieroglyphs, and to inspire you to learn more about ancient Egypt. \nI love ancient Egypt, and I wanted to be an Egyptologist since I was little. I watched every documentary I could find and bought a number of books on ancient Egypt. Can you relate? \nWhile I did take some detours along the way (can you believe I almost became an accountant?), I eventually made my way back to my first [true love and earned a Ph.D. in](true love and earned a Ph.D. in)[ ](true love and earned a Ph.D. in)[Egyptology.](Egyptology.) \n© [VoicesofAncientEgypt.com](VoicesofAncientEgypt.com) \nUnderstanding ancient Egypt on a deeper level is such a joy and so empowering! Because I want you to have that same feeling, teaching became a passion. \nBut I wanted to go beyond the classroom to reach more people like you – people in love with ancient Egypt. That’s why I started my YouTube channel and website: \nVoices of Ancient Egypt. And it’s why I created this guide to get you started. \nNow that I’ve introduced myself, I’d love it if you’d introduce yourself – in hieroglyphs! By the end of this guide, you will have written your name in hieroglyphs. \nSnap a picture of your hieroglyphic name and post it on Instagram and tag me at @VoicesOfAncientEgypt. Or email it to [melinda@voicesofancientegypt.com](melinda@voicesofancientegypt.com) \nI can’t wait to see it! 2 \nIntroduction \nMost people think that hieroglyphs were like modernemoji–pictures that communicate ideas (rather than sounds) . \nBut they actually are much more like our modern text speak. \nIn this section, I’ll show you why. \nHieroglyphs and Sounds \nHave you passed a note or sent a text message “in code” like this? \nIn this type of puzzle, the pictures are used for the sound of the thing shown, rather than the name of the thing: \n• the eye actually means “I”. \n• the female sheep (called a ewe) means “you” because “ewe” and“you” are pronounced the same way in English. \nThe heart is used in a different way. Instead of being used for its sound, we should read it as suggesting the idea of love. \nReading the pictures in this way, we get “I love you.” \nA more modern example of this same type of “code” would be common text speak, such as in this example: \nThe letters C and U and the number 8 are used only for how their names sound – “see”,“you”, and “ate” – and not for their usual meanings. So, C U L8R actually means “see you later.” \nIn the same way, we could use: \n(bee + leaves) to mean “believes”in English. \n© [VoicesofAncientEgypt.com](VoicesofAncientEgypt.com) 3 \nHow to read Hieroglyphs \nSo, why am I talking to you about picture-word puzzlesand text messaging? \nBecause Egyptian hieroglyphs worked in exactly the same way as text speak and picture-word puzzles. \nLet’s see an example of how this worked in Egyptian hieroglyphs. .. \nHieroglyphs representing complete words \nThe hieroglyph that is a picture of a mouth can be used to write the word for mouth or it can be used for its sound (like our letter r) . \n![image](https://weboffice-doc-exporter-sg-prod.obs.ap-southeast-3.myhuaweicloud.com:443/exporter_433d20b81104f534f5a58150ee9450c62f7982ad_11.png?AWSAccessKeyId=HPUACGBBHBTLFNRGBXNC&Expires=","cbCainNomfW4qDgl","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainNomfW4qDgl","pdf",1059470,2,1,18,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## Hieroglyphs and Sounds\n## How to Read Hieroglyphs\n## Hieroglyphs Representing Complete Words","[{\"question\":\"How can one hieroglyph represent more than one thing?\",\"answer\":\"A hieroglyph showing a mouth can be used to write the word “mouth” or it can be used for its sound, like how letters can represent sounds in modern writing.\"}]",1783310273,45,{"code":4,"msg":31,"data":32},"ok",{"site_id":25,"language":24,"slug":33,"title":13,"keywords":34,"description":14,"schema_data":35,"social_meta":78,"head_meta":80,"extra_data":82,"updated_unix":28},"half-hour-hieroglyphs-guide","",{"@graph":36,"@context":77},[37,53,68],{"@type":38,"itemListElement":39},"BreadcrumbList",[40,44,47,50],{"item":41,"name":42,"@type":43,"position":21},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":45,"name":46,"@type":43,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":43,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/religion-spirituality/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":43,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/half-hour-hieroglyphs-guide/40311/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":24,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":41,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-18","2026-07-06",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"How can one hieroglyph represent more than one thing?","Question",{"text":75,"@type":76},"A hieroglyph showing a mouth can be used to write the word “mouth” or it can be used for its sound, like how letters can represent sounds in modern writing.","Answer","https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":79,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":81,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":25},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":84},[85,89,93,97,102,107,112,117,120,123,127],{"id":21,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":86,"show_sort_weight":87,"slug":88},"Story & Novel",90,"story-novel",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":90,"show_sort_weight":91,"slug":92},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":94,"show_sort_weight":95,"slug":96},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":98,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":99,"show_sort_weight":100,"slug":101},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":103,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":104,"show_sort_weight":105,"slug":106},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":108,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":109,"show_sort_weight":110,"slug":111},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":113,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":114,"show_sort_weight":115,"slug":116},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":119},20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":118,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":122},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":124,"slug":126},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":128,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":130},19,"General","general"]
