\nEASTERN MICHIGAN \nUNVERSITY \nTHE \n# Haiti's HealthPromoters\n\nByJOHANNA BERRIGAN \n\"Lead your Church to sing your praise inevery place,at every time, for everything,in every way.God,turn our hearts to you.Letall people experience the beauty of yourcreation and gifts of clean air, water and food.God,turn our hearts to you.\"—Prayers forOct.30,2011,from Give Us This Day. \nAfter a harrowing time in line at the Portau Prince airport,I am finally in my seat onmy way home.I sit, breathe deeply, and pray. The first intercessory prayerfills my heartwith joy.The stress of the queue fadles away. The prayer reflects the experience of beingwith the people of Haiti. They are a peoplewho are capable of singing praise in everyplace,at every time, for everything,in everyway.I read the second prayer, and I feelamazed that the contrasting reality of the sit-uation in Haiti is so clearly written on thesame page this day.Yes,there truly is singingand praise, and yes, sadly, there is realhunger, the need for food, clean air and cleanwater. \nThere is also the need for health care—aneed we are diligently trying to meet throughour health care project.Kay Lasante.Wereturned to Haiti to spend time working withthe staff of our project.Bishop TomGumbleton and I were joined on this tripbyKatie Huynh,Physician Assistant and for-mer House of Grace community member,Mark McKenna,MD,and Laura McKenna, nurse practitioner, both of whom are longterm volunteers and supporters of the Houseof Grace Catholic Worker community.Wewere able to meet with the Haitian boardmembers, assist with health care services atthe clinic, and Katie,Mark and Laura provided continuing education classes for thenurses and health agents. The progress beingmade by the entire staff is impressive andheartwarming. \nSince our last visit to Haiti in May,therehave been several beneficial changes.InAugust,2011,Kara Grant, ene of our boardmembers, moved to Haiti to live and serve asinterim administrator.Kara's expertise, enthusiasm, and love for Haiti have beeninvaluable assets to the project. In addition tobeing a lawyer and having experience in operations management and mediation workKara also speaks Creole fluently.Theimproved communication between the USboard and Haitian board members, togetherwith Kara's day-to-day oversight of the projecthave radically improved the efficiency andease with which we are able to accomplishour goals.Kara's presence has been a“winwin\"for all involved. The board membersand staff in Haiti are delighted to have herwith them, accompanying them in their work.We are deeply grateful for her service. \nOn November 14th,Kay Lasante movedto a new location. The lease was up on theproperty we rented for the past year.Thenew location isvery close to our current clinic in the same neighborhood ofTi Plaz Kazo. The new Kay Lasante building will betterserve our needs. It is a larger building withmore rooms. We will have an administrativeoffice on site, space to expand laboratoryservices, and more rooms for consultations. There are more windows, which allow formore light. The floors are tiled, instead of(contised on page 7) \n# CATHOLI透\n\nFEB142012FEB142012 \n年的和86
