from a project managed by Grace King to increaseawareness and understanding of 20th century and 21st century poetry.DrDoreen King is general secretary of the British Haiku Society and the materialproduced here was used in workshops held during 2002-2003.Workshopparticipants asked if they could have collected leaflets and thanks are dueto the Millennium Commission and the Peabody Trust INTRODUCTION\n\nThe term hai dates back to Japanese myth. The Goddess Amaterasu Omikamihad two great grandsons who quarrelled. The eldest grandson was defeatedand he pleaded for his life by offering to become his younger brother's jester. He acted out his defeat as a comedy. The word haiyu refers to an actor, andhai suggests something a little comical but a little sad and a little humble too. \nThe late 17th century poet who spearheaded haiku was Basho(1644-1694).His influence was akin to that, for instance,of Wordsworth and Keats. In Japan, haiku is a“mainstream”poetry form.In the west it is often misunderstoodand widely considered a curiosity,and/or experimental form.Haiku poetsare often linked to zen because of their preoccupation with meditation,self-contemplation,and intuition. There are haiku poets of differing faiths.Haikuis often viewed as a holy poetry form and it can bring people together in termsof spirituality, understanding, and acceptance. \n## Writing Haiku\n\nThese are not rules and are offered as guidelines only. There are many brilliant haiku that deviate from what is mentioned below. \n1)Before the poet can write there has to be the insight:the \"moment.\" \n2)The 5/7/5 form is where five syllables are written on the first line, sevensyllables are written on the second line, and five syllables are written on thethird line. \n3)The 5/7/5 syllable count gives balance and traditions should be respected.Contemporary poets work to their own patterns and the poem may be oneline to four lines long.Haiku is very visual and this needs to be taken intoconsideration. \n4)Use present tense wherever possible. There is no title. \n5)Avoid punctuation and block letters.Use adverbs sparsely(eg gently etc)and also use adjectives sparsely (old, tall etc). Some poets avoid all\"I\"sand\"ing\"s while others use them widely.Enjambment and pivot words arefrequently used. \n6)Keep the images simple. \n7)Keep the wording simple. The haiku is humble. It is understated.Thereis no moral judgement. \n8)Complex metaphors and similes can work well but it is probably best forbeginners to avoid phases such as \"dancing water\". \n9)The poem is usually written as a statement/observation,The traditionalpoem has two parts. The first part gives one or two statements/observationsetc.The second part may give a twist or different \"take\", \n10)A caesura(dash)can be used to show the break. \n11)When using the conventional form, there is usually a connection betweentwo lines of the poem. This is frequently given at the beginning or end of thepoem. \n12)There is an emphasis on imagery and there is often tension between twoimages. \n13)The poem should be more than an observation. It should not be tooshallow. \n14)Use beautiful imagery. \n15)Use beautiful language.Beginners should avoid anthropomorphismand personification. The traditional haiku writer tends towards naturalisationand not humanisation of nature, although sometimes such forms can be veryeffective when used by experienced poets. \n16)It is usually best for beginners to avoid allrhyth","cbCaitd603seyXmr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitd603seyXmr","pdf",1940956,44,"English","# Acknowledgements\n# Introduction\n# Writing Haiku\n## Reading Haiku","[{\"question\":\"What is the
