Developed in response to COVID-19 and broader social obstacles, it frames responsibilities for enabling essential learning beyond visual communication theory. The book outlines an actionable Value Design Education Pledge, mapping society, educators, designers, and student experiences to concrete pledge actions and sustainable educational change.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nGuiding Principles for Inclusive \nDesign Values \nReimagining Design Practice & Education \nALIGNED WITH THEAIGA DESIGN EDUCATORS COMMUNITY VALUE DESIGN EDUCATION PLEDGE \nANNE H. This book is not a tool kit or a onesize-fits-all set of approaches or “how-tos.” Rather, Guiding Principles for Inclusive Design Values is meant to provide guidance and achievable changes that lead to tangible impact. \nBACKGROUND OF THE VALUE DESIGN EDUCATION PLEDGE \nIn the spring of 2020, as COVID-19 made its way across the United States, many designers and design educators across the globe found themselves addressing the effects that new social and economic obstacles had on themselves and their students. The ability to engage in their coursework, access university facilities and resources, and maintain the social and cultural networks that many of them relied on to bolster their educational and emotional experiences was negatively affected. This confluence of events emphasized the responsibilities design educators took on to facilitate essential learning that went beyond the formal and theoretical underpinnings of visual communication design. \nThe question “How can design educators address obstacles without creating additional burdens for weary students and faculty?” loomed large. In May 2020, theAIGA’s Design Educators Community (DEC) held a virtual roundtable discussion hosted by Anne H. Berry, Penina Laker, Meaghan Dee, Rebecca Tegtmeyer, and Kelly Walters to address the challenges design educators were encountering in real time. \nThis event became the catalyst for a broader conversation about how a specific array of approaches for framing and facilitating design education could impact design students preparing to enter professional practice in the 2020s and beyond. The discussions also inspired a series of ideas rooted in reimagining and reshaping design curricula and learning experiences. Two criteria were key: changes would have to be formulated and implemented in \nways that 1) ensured that they would be manageable and sustainable and 2) could be accomplished without imposing undue burdens on educators, given the new types of planning, teaching, and documenting that were required at the onset of the pandemic. \nThe Value Design Education Pledge became an actionable commitment to enact these changes in the classroom. Though the move to online teaching was temporary, the sustained impact of the disruption on educational systems required additional thinking and planning about how to structure courses and course curricula and how to assess students’ work output and learning over time. Guiding Principles for Inclusive Design Values is an extension of designers’ and educators’ collective effort to crowdsource and gather resources, share perspectives, distribute knowledge, and provide ongoing support to one another while cultivating inclusive, holistic, and sustainable teaching pedagogy for a post-pandemic era. \nTIMELINE OF EVENTS 2020 \nMARCH MAY \nPandemic Begins \nAnti-Asian Hate Incidents Increase \nValue Design Education Roundtable \nAUGUST DECEMBER \nBLM Protests Begin Value Design Education Pledge \nBegins \nValue Design Education Pledge R","cbCaioAFQlzX4Uzb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioAFQlzX4Uzb","pdf",13377413,1,372,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## Value Design Education Pledge Background\n## Timeline of Events 2020\n## Principle Pledge Action (Society, Graphic Designers, Design Educators, People/Audiences, Class Environment, Individual Students)","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of Guiding Principles for Inclusive Design Values?\",\"answer\":\"It provides guidance and achievable changes to create tangible impact in inclusive workplaces, projects, curricula, and design education practice, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all tool kit.\"},{\"question\":\"How did the Value Design Education Pledge originate?\",\"answer\":\"It emerged from a 2020 conversation and roundtable hosted by the AIGA Design Educators Community, shaped by challenges created by COVID-19 and social and economic obstacles affecting educators and students.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of commitments does the book include in the pledge?\",\"answer\":\"It includes commitments such as being anti-racist, upholding all design histories beyond Western influences, distributing knowledge, demonstrating impact, and creating community culture within classroom environments.\"}]","Guiding Principles for Inclusive Design Values -
