The work was facilitated by Achieving the Dream and shaped by a bi-monthly community of practice that brought together colleges across the state. \nThrough this collaborative forum, institutions shared resources, strategies, and lessons learned that informed both the design and the implementation of guided self-placement models on their campuses. The insights gathered from these peer exchanges created a strong foundation for this guide. \nImportantly, the resource was designed to align with the 2021 Michigan Guided Self-Placement Principles , ensuring consistency with statewide priorities while also reflecting the innovation, feedback, and practical experiences of participating colleges. \nGUIDED SELF-PLACEMENT GUIDEBOOK 1 \nINTRODUCTION \nA guided self-placement (GSP) model for mathematics and English offers colleges a more equitable, student-centered approach to placement that prioritizes informed choice, supports accurate course alignment, and helps students start on a clear path toward their goals. Unlike traditional placement tests, which often rely on a single score from a high-stakes exam, GSP invites students to engage in a structured reflection on their academic history, comfort with course content, and educational aspirations. This process, paired with transparent guidance from faculty or advisors, empowers students to make more confident and informed placement decisions. \nFor colleges, adopting GSP can reduce the number of students placed into unnecessary developmental courses, improve course completion rates, and close equity gaps by minimizing the disproportionate impact that standardized testing can have on first-generation students, students of color, and returning adult learners. For students, it can shorten their time to degree, lower costs by eliminating redundant coursework, and increase their likelihood of persisting and succeeding in college-level classes. By replacing a one-size-fits-all testing model with a collaborative decision-making process, guided self-placement positions the institution and its students for greater success from the first term. \nIt is essential for colleges to carefully consider where and how guided self-placement is integrated into the broader student onboarding journey. The timing and placement of this process are not logistical details—they are critical design decisions that directly influence whether students receive the right information, guidance, and support at the right moment. \nWhen thoughtfully positioned, guided self-placement serves as more than a one-time assessment; it becomes a catalyst for meaningful, student-centered advising conversations. These conversations help students reflect on their prior experiences, understand their academic options, and make informed choices that align with their goals. Ensuring that GSP occurs before students register for courses—and ideally, in close connection with academic advising—can reduce confusion, improve placement accuracy, and support stronger initial course enrollment decisions. \nTo achieve this level of intentionality, colleges benefit from mapping the student journey from application through registration. Visualizing each step in the onboarding process allows crossfunctional teams to identify: \n• Where students encounter key decision points , such as completing the admissions application, accessing orientation, or selecting a program of study. \n• When and how students engage with advisors , success coaches, or intake specialists. \n• What supports or resources students need before, during, and after completing guided self-placement activities. \nBy examining this journey holistically, institutional stakeholders can determine the","cbCaivWvwk1f3ONp","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivWvwk1f3ONp","pdf",9295620,64,"English","# Introduction\n## Guided self-placement model and purpose\n## Impact on colleges and students\n## Integration into the onboarding journey\n## Mapping the student journey\n# About this resource\n## Resource purpose and development\n## Included resource types","[{\"question\":\"How does guided self-placement differ from traditional placement tests?\",\"answer\":\"Guided self-placement replaces a single high-stakes test score with structured reflection on students’ academic history, course content comfort, and educational aspirations, supported by transparent guidance from faculty or advisors.\"},{\"question\":\"What benefits does GSP offer colleges and students?\",\"answer\":\"For colleges, GSP can reduce unnecessary developmental placements, improve completion rates, and address equity gaps.
