It covers multiple cultivation options such as plastic bags, pots, logs, and trays, and describes a typical one-to-three-month production cycle. The booklet emphasizes the need for expert advice because some species are poisonous, details common growing media and preparation steps (chopping, soaking, liming, fertilizing, sterilising), and outlines harvesting, packing, selling, and restarting the process.","Growing Mushrooms \nlevel: intermediate \nEnglish Agriculture \nGrowing Mushrooms \nIt uses material from Footsteps 99 \nthe literacy publication of Tear Fund with kind permission Illustrated by MissionAssist \nEnglish Oxfordshire, England \nCopyright © 2021, MissionAssist \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. They grow quickly, and are rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. You do not need farmland to grow mushrooms, so it could be a practical project for either a rural or an urban area. \nThere are several ways of growing mushrooms. They can be grown in plastic bags, in pots, on logs or on wooden trays arranged in stacks — anywhere where the light level, temperature and water supply can be controlled. A simple building can provide controlled growing conditions. The growing cycle takes between one and three months. If possible, get advice from a successful grower before setting up your own business. \nPlease note: Some species of mushrooms can be poisonous, soit is important to get expert advice right at the start. Mushroomspawn is best obtained from a specialist supplier, who can probably also give you helpful advice. Members ofyour own community, a local agricultural college or an NGO may be able to help you find a suitable specialist supplier. \nThere are many edible mushroom species; each grows best in a particular growing medium. However, some species can grow on a wide range of materials. \nExamples of growing medium include: \n• rice/wheat straw —for oyster, straw and common mushrooms \n• coffee pulp — oyster and shiitake mushrooms \n• sawdust or logs — shiitake, oyster, pom pom, ear and maitake mushrooms \n• water hyacinth stems or banana leaves — straw and oyster mushrooms \nThe easiest types of mushroom to grow in hot areas are oyster, volvariella and maitake. \nChoose a growing medium that is easy to obtain. If you are using straw, stems or leaves you should chop them up first. Whichever medium you decide to use, soak it under water for several days (to kill insects), then dry it out and ","cbCaitRqCuKdbFuz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitRqCuKdbFuz","pdf",176528,3,1,13,"English","en",105,"# Growing Mushrooms\n## Benefits and Overview\n## Growing Methods and Conditions\n## Choosing and Preparing Growing Medium\n## Mycelium, Harvesting, and Restarting\n## Key Steps","[{\"question\":\"Why do you need expert advice before starting mushroom cultivation?\",\"answer\":\"Some mushroom species can be poisonous, so expert guidance is important from the start.
