Writing his story was incredibly challenging, but also humbling. According to the World Health Organization, one in four people in the world will be affected by mental disorders at some point in their lives. Many of these people do not have a voice. They suffer quietly in their pain. When it comes to mental illness, the world can be cruel and unforgiving, apathetic in its ignorance.  \nGiving Grayson a voice was important to me, but more important was ensuring that his voice was authentic. That being said, I found writing from the point of view of someone who is schizophrenic to be a herculean task. When Grayson is in full-blown psychosis, I was obligated to give him  \nperiods of lucidity or his story couldn’t be told. That holds true throughout the book. Nevertheless, it was emotional, exhausting, heart-breaking, and therapeutic to be in the head of this hero who has been through so much and still perseveres all in the name of true love.
