It describes practical drafting tools and full-size construction methods for tracing rays through multiple thin lenses and mirrors. The notes explain core pointer rules for thin lenses, the parallel ray method, off-axis object points, virtual image formation, multi-lens image location via key rays, and extensions for positive and YOU like optics you will find graphical raytracing both interesting and instructive.Thesimple graphical trace combined with a bit ofelementary math will give you the approximatefirst solution to any kind of optical problem in-volving an object and an image. You can putlight rays through multiple lenses almost aseasily as through a singie element. \nTools needed are the common ones used inany kind of mechanical drawing or drafting, thatis, drawing bozrd and T-square.An adjustabletriangle is helpful, almost a must for the popularand useful oblique trace.Three or more colorsof pencils or ballpoint desk pens will make yourwork easy on the eyes and easy to understand. \nDrawings should be made full-size wheneverpossible, and if beyondyour board, the aperturesshould be retained full-size,scaling down thelongitudinal dimensions only to suit. \n# First Pointers\n\n回LENS IS ASSUMED TOHAVE NO THICKNESS-IT ISREPRESENTED BY ASINGLE LINESINCE THIN LENSES ARESELDOM OVER 4\"THICK,NO GREAT ERRORS object point which isusually taken as the edge of the object.Apply-ing the three simple rules shown, you can tracelight rays from this point, through the lens, tothe corresponding point on the image.Only tworays are actually needed to locate the image, but the thirdis useful as a kind of check or proof. All this is simple geometry,so if at times youdon't get a perfect intersection of lines, don'tblame it on the \"system.\" \nA SECOND LENS.After you locate the imagepoint, any number of additional light rays can bedrawn,Fig.5.UBing this idea, you can locatein the cone of light from the first lens, the keyrays for a second lens,as shown in Figs.6,7and 8.Of the three initial rays, only the lower-most leaving the first lens parallel is continuedthrough the second lens,Fig.6.The other twokey rays for the second lens must be found byback-tracking from theimage polnt in the mannershown. \nOBJECT INSIDE FOCUS.Figs.10 and 11 showhow to handle this situation. You use the samethree rules as before, but now the light raysmust be extended backwards to locate the virtualimage,Anytime you get two or more light raysdiverging or spreading after they leave alens ormirror, you know the imageis vlrtual and can befound by extending the light rays in the oppositedirection. \nPOSITIVE MIRROR.A positive(concave)mirrorforms an image in much the same way as apositive lens, except the undeviated ray passesthrough the center of curvature, which is rule 1in Fig.12.The other two rules are the same asfor a lens, except the light is reflected insteadof being refracted, \nThe case of an object inside
