Many languages do not have direct equivalents ofall the classes of words that exist in English or ofall the grammatical structures. \nAlthough you do not need to be a grammar expert in English to write well, it is helpful to have some knowledge of the basic terminology and the rules and conventions of grammar. However, memorising grammar rules is not the purpose of this resource. Instead, we aim to help you understand and apply some basic principles of grammar, so you can understand how English works and avoid making the most common mistakes in your academic writing. \nEach chapter: \n• defines key terms for the topic \n• explains common grammatical patterns \n• includes activities to practice grammar points. Answers to all exercises are provided at the end of each chapter. \nACAD E M IC G RA M MAR WO R K BOO K \n1. WORDS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS \nTEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE \nWords categorised according to grammatical or syntactic function, are called parts of speech. The main parts of speech in English are: \n• nouns \n• pronouns \n• adjectives \n• articles (determiners) \n• verbs (one word and multi-word) \n• adverbs \n• prepositions \n• conjunctions. \nIn the text below1, find at least one example of each part of speech and write it/them in the correct space. \nnoun adverb \n\n| verb | article |\n| --- | --- |\n| pronoun | preposition |\n\nadjective conjunction \nIn the last 50 years the global food industry has profoundly changed the way we eat. We understand that dietary changes impact on physical health but their effect on our mental wellbeing is only now being realised. Big business has successfully marketed food that appeals to modern taste and that is also addictive. Many highly processed snacks and takeaway food, rich in tasty fats and sugars, have now replaced the fruit, vegetables and other nutritious unprocessed foods that used to be an important part of people’s diets. \nKEY TERMS AND DEFINITIONS \nNouns \nA noun identifies or names a person, animal, place, thing, or idea. \nA count noun has a plural form, e.g. child/ children, researcher /researchers. We can quantify a count noun: \none tutor, three assignments, a hundred students. \n1 Adapted from [https://theconversation.com/you-are-what-you-eat-how-diet-affects-mental-well-being-27115](https://theconversation.com/you-are-what-you-eat-how-diet-affects-mental-well-being-27115) \nACAD E M IC G RA M MAR WO R K BOO K \nVerbs \nPronouns \nA non-count noun can refer to several ‘things’ but it does not never have a plural form. We do not put a number in front of non-count nouns, [e.g. data](e.g. data) (never ✗ one data), research (✗ three researches) . \nVerbs express activity and every complete sentence must have a verb. Verbs can signal: \nan action: Julia studied hard. \na state: Robert was sleepy. \nan occurrence: There was an eclipse last night. \nA verb is often a single word but, in negative sentences, in most questions and in some tenses, verbs consist of at least two elements, an auxiliary plus some form of the root verb. \nThe results were not conclusive. \n(auxiliary) (main verb) \nPronouns replace nouns. A pronoun can do everything a noun can do. They can function as the subject of a sentence or as the object (direct or indirect) . \nPersonal pronou","cbCaieKxfBrlPmfg","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieKxfBrlPmfg","pdf",5922943,111,"English","# Introduction\n## Learning Objectives\n## Words and Their Functions\n## Sentences\n## Verbs and Verb Tenses\n## Modal Verbs\n## Reporting Verbs\n## Articles, Determiners and Quantifiers\n## Conjunctions\n## Pronouns\n## Vocabulary\n## Common Grammatical Errors\n## Strategies to Correct Errors","[{\"question\":\"What is the goal of the Academic Grammar Workbook introduction?\",\"answer\":\"To help learners understand and apply basic grammar principles for academic writing so they can understand how English works and avoid common mistakes.\"},{\"question\":\"How is each chapter in the workbook structured for learning?\",\"answer\":\"Each chapter defines key terms, explains common grammatical patterns, includes activities to practice grammar points, and provides answers to exercises at the end of the chapter.\"},{\"question\":\"Which grammatical topics are covered in the workbook table of contents?\",\"answer\":\"It covers parts of speech, sentences, verb forms and tenses, modal verbs, reporting verbs, articles/determiners/quantifiers, conjunctions, pronouns, vocabulary, common grammatical errors, and strategies to correct them.\"}]","Grammar for Academic Writing - Academic Grammar Workbook - Introduction | PDF",1790644260,280]
