Stage One establishes eligibility for a Learner’s Licence (Class 7), including minimum age, vision and knowledge testing, parental consent when under 18, and specific learner conditions. Stage Two requires qualifying for a Probationary Driver (Class 5-GDL) with an Alberta Class 5 road test and probation terms. The GDL program ensures new drivers, regardless of age, get the support, skills and experience they need to handle the complex task of driving. \nThe chart below outlines the program. \n1 STAGE ONE \nLEARNER \nTo obtain a Learner’s Licence (Class 7) you must: \n• Be 14 years of age or older. \n• Pass a vision test and a knowledge test on the rules of the road. \n• Have parental consent if you are under 18 years of age. \n• Have valid identification. \nLearner’s Conditions \n• Must hold the Learner’s licence (Class 7) for at least 1 year. \n• Must be accompanied by a fully licensed (non-GDL probationary) driver who is 18 years of age or older and who is seated next to the driver. \n• Not permitted to drive from midnight to 5 A.M. \n• Not permitted to have more passengers than seat belts \n• They will be suspended at 8 demerit points rather than the 15 for fully licensed drivers. \n• Have a zero alcohol level. \nUpdated 08/10 \n2 STAGE TWO \nPROBATIONARY \nTo become a Probationary Driver (Class 5-GDL) you must: \n• Be 16 years of age or older. \n• Have held a Class 7 licence at least one year. \n• Pass the basic Alberta Class 5 road test. \nProbationary Conditions \n• Must spend a minimum of 2 years asa probationary driver. \n• Not permitted to have more passengers than seat belts. \n• They will be suspended at 8 demerit points rather than the 15 for fully licenced drivers. \n• Have a zero alcohol level. \n• No upgrading to a commercial licence (Classes 1, 2, 3 or 4) . \n• Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a learner. \nTo become a fully licenced driver (Class 5) you must: \n• Have been suspension free for the last year of the 2-year Probationary Stage. \n• Pass an advanced road test. \nStage 1 + Stage 2 \nIt will take a minimum of 3 years to complete both stages of Graduated Driver Licensing. It will take 4 years if you get your Learner’s Licence at 14 years of age. \nTo become a Probationary Driver you must: \n• Be 16 years of age or older. \n• Pass the basic Alberta Class 5 road test. \nProbationary Conditions \n• Must spend a minimum of 2 years as a probationary driver. \n• Not permitted to have more passengers than seat belts. \n• They will be suspended at 8 demerit points than fully licenced drivers at 15. \nIf you apply for a Motorcycle Licence (Class 6) as your first licence, you are subject to the conditions of the Graduated Licensing Program. \n• If learning to drive a motorcycle, you must be 16 years of age and are not permitted to drive during nighttime hours. Night time for GDL motorcycle riders is defined as from one hour after sunset or 12:00 midnight, whichever is earlier, and extends until one hour before sunrise or 5 A.M., whichever is later. \n• You must be accompanied by a fully licenced (non-GDL probationary) driver who is 18 years of age or older and is either seated on the motorcycle with you or is following you in close proximity in or on another motor vehicle. \nNote: Operators of a moped with a Class 7 licence are subject to the zero alcohol level restrictions and are not permitted to drive during nighttime hours. \nFor further information, contact Alberta Transportation at 780 427-8901, or toll free by first calling 310-0000. \nUpdated 08/10","cbCailQOJaEnnom9","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailQOJaEnnom9","pdf",37948,"English","# Stage One: Learner\n## Learner requirements\n## Learner conditions\n# Stage Two: Probationary\n## Probationary requirements\n## Probationary conditions\n# Completing both stages\n## Minimum timeline\n# Motorcycle and moped notes","[{\"question\":\"What are the basic eligibility requirements for a Learner’s Licence (Class 7) in Alberta GDL?\",\"answer\":\"You must be 14 or older, pass a vision test and a knowledge test on the rules of the road, have parental consent if under 18, and provide valid identification.\"},{\"question\":\"How long must a learner hold the Learner’s Licence (Class 7) before moving to Stage Two?\",\"answer\":\"Learners must hold the Class 7 licence for at least 1 year.\"},{\"question\":\"What key restrictions apply to probationary drivers in Stage Two?\",\"answer\":\"Probationary drivers must spend a minimum of 2 years in the probationary stage, cannot carry more passengers than seat belts, have a zero alcohol level, are suspended at 8 demerit points, and cannot upgrade to commercial licence classes (1, 2, 3, or 4) or accompany learners.\"}]","GRADUATED DRIVER LICENSING - Rules for new drivers | PDF"]
