The story details their shopping experience, highlighting the purchase of fresh produce like bananas, pineapples, cucumbers, watercress, bok choy, tomatoes, pumpkins, lemons, and papayas. It also touches upon social interactions, including a catch-up between the mother and her cousin, and the daughter's solo venture to buy a refreshing coconut drink called 'niu'. The narrative emphasizes the sensory details of the market, from the smell of ripe fruit to the sweet taste of coconut juice, and the visual spectacle of various stalls. A recurring element is the daughter's lighthearted dread of buying a pumpkin, contrasting with her mother's practical shopping list. The story concludes with the mother purchasing Koko Samoa, a favorite drink for her husband, concluding their market expedition with a sense of accomplishment and preparation for family day. The narrative is rich with cultural references, painting a vivid picture of community life and family traditions.","Going to the Market Jane Va’afusuaga \nTiana Elijah \nEvery Saturday, Mum and I catch the early bus into town to go to the market. \nThe market is busy every day, but on Saturdays, it’s crazy! Because everyone is getting supplies for Sunday to’ona’i. \nFirst of all, Mum buys two big bunches of bananas. The stall also sells pineapple. Mum picks up a couple and sniffs them until she find a ripe one . She pays for it and hands it tome to carry. \nI follow behind Mum until she stops at a stall selling vegetables. She chooses two huge cucumbers, a bundle of watercress, two bundles of bok choy and a bag of tomatoes \n“Malo Lose!” It’s Mum’s cousin. She and Mum start talking. I put down the bag with the pineapple and looked around the market. \nCarrying all this shopping is thirsty work so I ask Mum if I can have a drink. She gives me some money and carries on talking to Lose. Igo to the far side of the market to buy a cold niu. The man at the stall opens it for me and I take a long drink of the sweet juice. \nI started walking back to where Mum was, but I couldn’t see her. One of the women from our village has a stall selling papaya and lemons. I asked her if she’d seen Mum.“No,” she says, shaking her head.“But it’s your family’s turn to decorate the church on Sunday so perhaps she’s over there.” She points in the direction of the stalls selling fresh flowers . \nI rush over just in time to help Mum carry the huge bunch of flowers she has just bought. “Have you got everything you need now Mum?” I ask.“Almost,” she replies. “I just need one more thing.” \n“I hope it’s not a pumpkin,” I think to myself. But luckily, Mum stops by a stall selling koko Samoa. “It’s for my husband, it’s his favourite drink,” Mum tells the woman who serves her while tucking the koko into her woven basket.","cbCaiiQosth3c161","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiiQosth3c161","pdf",1517510,2,13,"English","en",105,"# Going to the Market\n## Preparing for Sunday\n## Shopping for Produce\n## A Visit from an Acquaintance\n## Refreshment\n## Seeking the Mother\n## Finishing the Shopping","[{\"question\":\"What day is the busiest at the market and why?\",\"answer\":\"Saturdays are the busiest days at the market because everyone is getting supplies for Sunday to'ona'i, a traditional Samoan meal.\"},{\"question\":\"What items does the mother typically buy at the market?\",\"answer\":\"The mother buys various items including bananas, pineapples, cucumbers, watercress, bok choy, tomatoes, flowers, and Koko Samoa.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the daughter do when she can't find her mother?\",\"answer\":\"When she can't find her mother, the daughter asks a stall owner if she has seen her, and then heads towards the flower stalls based on a suggestion about decorating the church.\"}]",1783567702,20,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":27},"going-to-the-market","",{"@graph":35,"@context":84},[36,52,67],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,46,49],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/going-to-the-market/48154/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":40,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-14","2026-07-09",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"What day is the busiest at the market and why?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"Saturdays are the busiest days at the market because everyone is getting supplies for Sunday to'ona'i, a traditional Samoan meal.","Answer",{"name":77,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":78},"What items does the mother typically buy at the market?",{"text":79,"@type":75},"The mother buys various items including bananas, pineapples, cucumbers, watercress, bok choy, tomatoes, flowers, and Koko Samoa.",{"name":81,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":82},"What does the daughter do when she can't find her mother?",{"text":83,"@type":75},"When she can't find her mother, the daughter asks a stall owner if she has seen her, and then heads towards the flower stalls based on a suggestion about decorating the church.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,95,99,103,108,113,118,123,127,130,134],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},90,"story-novel",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":100,"show_sort_weight":101,"slug":102},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":104,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":28,"slug":126},9,"Religion & Spirituality","religion-spirituality",{"id":28,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":128,"show_sort_weight":28,"slug":129},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":131,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":132,"show_sort_weight":131,"slug":133},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":135,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":136,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":137},19,"General","general"]
