\nEros'and'Agape’-difference and unity \n3.The ancient Greeks used the word eros to describe the love be-tween man and woman. It is not used in the New Testament andthis is significant. The word agape is preferred. This points to anew understanding of Christian love.It has been claimed thatthe Church with its laws, poisoned the word eros which offersthe Creator’s gift of joy as a certain foretaste of the Divine.Doesthe Church turn to bitterness the most precious things in life?Isthis true? \n4.The Greeks considered eros as a kind of intoxication.Theycalled it a'divine madness'and said that it was a divine powergiving supreme happiness. This gave rise to'sacred'prostitutionand fertility cults in temples. \nThe misuse of eros reduced temple prostitutes to mere things.Without rejecting the word, the Old Testament showed that itneeded to be disciplined and purified.Otherwise eros is just afleeting pleasure rather than a foretaste to the happiness forwhich we all yearn. \n5.There is a link between purified mature eros and theDivine;love promises infinity, eternity. This goal is not attained \nby surrendering to instinct. When eros is purified through thepath of renunciation it is healed and restored to its truegrandeur. \nThis is so because the human person is body and soul, fleshand spirit. It is neither the body nor the soul alone that loves. It isonly when both are united that ","cbCair3GXNgIkZv4","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCair3GXNgIkZv4","pdf",1569367,28,"English","# Note\n# Introduction\n# The Unity of Love in Creation and in Salvation History\n## A problem of language\n## Eros and Agape - difference and unity","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of this unofficial abridged version?\",\"answer\":\"It aims to introduce readers to the full text of the encyclical.
