The work develops a semantic method for analyzing Qur’anic vocabulary through both basic and relational meanings, in synchronic and diachronic perspectives. It traces major themes such as God and man, the unseen and visible, divine communication (signs, guidance, worship), revelation and prayer, and the ethical and eschatological relations that structure Fazlur Rahman* \nThis book, which constitutes volume V of the series Studies in theHumanities and Social Relations of Keio University is written byProfessor Toshihiko Izutsu and has emerged out of his lectures atMcGill University,Montreal in the spring of 1962 and 1963.Actually,I participated in a seminar given by Dr.Izutsu at McGillduring the 1960-61 session where he had tried out some of the ideascontained in this book. These seem to have matured over the yearsand this constitutes not only a welcome addition to the existingliterature on Islam but introduces a new approach to the under-standing of Islam—particularly by non-Muslims—the linguisticapproach. The Arabic mistakes that appear in the book(some ofwhich must be sheer misprints which are also frequent in the book)must not lead the reader to accuse the writer of inadequacy in Arabicwhich he knows and speaks fluently.Nor is this Dr.Izutsu's firstwork on the Qur'an,he has already given us a work on the ethicalconcepts of the Holy Book. \nAt the outset,Dr.Izutsu gives us his idea of the sciencc oflinguistics or semantics through which he wishes to understand theQur'an,\"Semantics as I understand it is an analytic study of thc key-terms of a language with a view to arriving eventually at a conceptual \nGOD AND MAN IN THE QUR'AN \ngrasp of the weltanschauung or world-view of the people who usethat language...”. \nA semantical study of the Qur'an would, therefore,be an analy-tical study of the key-terms of the Qur'an.In the succeeding pages,Dr.Izutsu makes it abundantly clear that by a study of the key-termsis not merely meant just a mechanical analysis of these terms orconcepts in isolation or as static units but even more importantlyincludes their living, contextual import,as they are used in theQur'an.Thus, although the term Allah was used by some pre-IslamicArabs not only to mean a deity among deities but even a supremedeity in hierarchy of
