The GCSE Options Evening marks the start of this process. It allows students and their parents to hear about our exciting academic curriculum and begin to consider their strengths and interests in relation to the subject options. In tandem with Parents’Evenings and reports throughout Year 9, this booklet is positioned so students can make informed choices when the time comes. We recommend that students, parents and guardians devote time to reading the information in this booklet. Following Options Evening, students can discuss their GCSE options with their Form Tutor, Head of Year, and their allocated senior staff member.  \nWe are especially excited to introduce you to our unique GCSE curriculum offer, which matches our whole-school emphasis on individualism and ambition. On the one hand, it allows students to construct a bespoke programme of study, maximising the chances of enjoyment and success. On the other hand, our core curriculum ensures that students have the expected range of GCSE subjects to satisfy future entry requirements.  \nAt Dulwich Cranbrook, most students study nine GCSEs as standard and ten if they choose Extended Maths or apply to study an additional subject. We wish to emphasise quality over quantity. Universities and employers are far more interested in the grades students achieve at GCSE than the number of qualifications taken. This is especially important given that recent reform to GCSEs means more content to learn and more skills to master than has previously been the case.  \nWe are a proudly academically ambitious school, but we also take seriously our duty to prepare students to do more than pass examinations. Therefore, students will take our‘Leadership and Life Skills’ course alongside their GCSEs. Throughout the various modules, students will sharpen their study habits, learn vital employability skills, and develop an understanding of leadership and collaboration. Overall, the ‘Leadership and Life Skills’ course will ensure they are ‘real-world ready’ and encourage them to engage critically with the world around them.  \nSome students will already know what they want to study after GCSEs, which university course they aspire to, and even which career path they might follow. However, most students in Year 9 will still be considering a range of possibilities for their future. Please do not worry; this is perfectly normal. Students should choose enjoyable and intellectually stimulating subjects, since experience shows this approach leads to engagement and success at GCSE and beyond.  \nAs part ofour commitment to rethinking the teenage experience, we want our students to have genuine choices for their GCSE years.
