Our strategic value to New Zealand encompasses knowledge and understanding of indigenous energy sources, groundwater, mineral resources, geological hazards, climate change, risk assessment, air quality monitoring, new materials, and marine geology. Our approach is to be highly collaborative and this enables us to assemble the best possible teams for every project. \nCONTENTS \n04 Our year in numbers \n05 Chairman and Acting Chief Executive’s commentary \n08 Statement of Core Purpose \n09 Statement of Corporate Intent achievements \n12 Vision Ma-tauranga \n14 National Science Challenge report \n16 Breakdown of research funding investment \n18 Science for a cleaner New Zealand \n– Past, present & future climates \n– Air, water & land \n23 \n31 \n39 \nScience for a safer New Zealand \n– Hazard monitoring \n– Understanding hazards \n– Assessing risk \n– Societal & economic resilience Science for a more prosperous New Zealand \n– Renewable geothermal energy \n– Petroleum resources \n– Mineral resources \n– New materials & processes Underpinning geoscience knowledge \n– Zealandia revealed \n– Geoscience information \n44 Staff awards and honours \n45 GNS Science at a glance \n46 Being a good employer \n49 Organisational structure \n50 Board of directors \n52 Executive team \n54 Performance indicators \n57 Corporate governance \n59 Report of the directors \n60 Financial statements \n78 Directory \n80 Photo acknowledgements \nLIVING ON A PLATE BOUNDARY \nNature’s forces can change our world dramatically at anytime. Our work in understanding the processes and impacts of earthquakes, eruptions, tsunamis, and landslides helps to reduce the risks and downstream impacts of these hazards, increases the resilience of our buildings and infrastructure, and helps to minimise casualties. The more we learn about these hazards, the better prepared we are to deal with them. \nMONITORING AIR QUALITY \nTwo thirds of New Zealanders live in urban areas that experience episodes of degraded air quality, particularly in winter. We use our specialist expertise in ion beam analysis to identify the sources of tiny particles of matter suspended in the air. This gives territorial authorities a sound basis for developing mitigation strategies to improve air quality and reduce chronic health problems caused by air pollution. \nSCIENCE AND SOCIETY \nCommunicating our science to the public is a priority for GNS Science. We have a range of channels for distributing our public messages including teacher networks, school visits, the media, public presentations, YouTube, social media, our website and exhibitions. One such exhibition is Dinosaur Footprints: A Story of Discovery, which has toured New Zealand for nearly three years. With support from principal sponsor NZ Oil & Gas, it has been showcased at 11 venues and seen by more than 250,000 visitors. \nPROTECTING OUR GROUNDWATER \nGroundwater accounts for about 30% of New Zealand’s water consumption. We use innovative methods to map, characterise and monitor many of New Zealand’s 200 known aquifers. Both local and central government rely on our maps, 3D models and analysis to develop policy and day-today management of precious freshwater resources. \nGNS Science Annual Report 2016 1 \nAND \nGLOBALLY \nOur skills in geothermal energy development and advising on mitigation of geological hazards are in demand in Asian and Pacific nations. We also provide specialist services in marine geology and geophysics, particularly relating to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) . In these applied science areas we are among the best in the world. \nThe additional expertise we acquire with this international work is brought back home where it can be applied in localsettings for the bene","cbCaicvAkM7EesTL","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicvAkM7EesTL","pdf",2155949,57,"English","# Our year in numbers\n# Chairman and Acting Chief Executive’s commentary\n# Statement of Core Purpose\n# Statement of Corporate Intent achievements\n# Vision Ma-tauranga\n# National Science Challenge report\n# Breakdown of research funding investment\n# Science for a cleaner New Zealand\n# Science for a safer New Zealand\n# Science for a more prosperous New Zealand\n# Underpinning geoscience knowledge\n# Staff awards and honours\n# GNS Science at a glance\n# Being a good employer\n# Organisational structure\n# Board of directors\n# Executive team\n# Performance indicators\n# Corporate governance\n# Report of the directors\n# Financial statements\n# Directory","[{\"question\":\"What areas of expertise does GNS Science cover in its 2016 annual report?\",\"answer\":\"The report states that its capabilities span geosciences, supported by isotope technologies and social science skills, covering topics such as indigenous energy sources, groundwater, mineral resources, geological hazards, climate change, and air quality monitoring.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the report describe GNS Science’s approach to delivering projects?\",\"answer\":\"It emphasizes a highly collaborative approach that assembles the best teams for each project, combining knowledge in geoscience with specialist technical skills and international experience.\"},{\"question\":\"Which types of natural hazard and climate work are highlighted?\",\"answer\":\"Examples include understanding earthquakes, eruptions, tsunamis, and landslides to reduce risks, monitoring air quality to address pollution-related chronic health problems, and Antarctic climate probes to reconstruct environmental changes and inform future climate understanding.\"}]","GNS Science Annual Report 2016 - 2016 Part 1 - Making a World of Difference | PDF",144]
